Re: Conor Shaughnessy rated?

I suspect we and Leeds currently have different expectatioms for our CBs. We are probably looking for defenders who are comfortable on the ball, Leeds are looking for defenders who are comfortable stamping on someone's head.

Re: Under 23"s Supposedly not ready for first team football.

On balance, I think it's worth it. In a game of incremental gains, I think it gives us an advantage over some of our rivals. When you consider the way the transfer market has gone this summer, if we can average 1 player a year establishing themselves in the first team squad, I think it pays for itse...

Re: Under 23"s Supposedly not ready for first team football.

Reading into it more some of the criteria for a Cat 1 academy, that £2.5m is just the annual running costs. To get Cat 1, among other things, you need: A full time dedicated coach for every 8 academy players A full sized floodlit pitch (this does not include the first team stadium) A full size indoo...

Re: Under 23"s Supposedly not ready for first team football.

This is all my reading of the Academy system. I may be misunderstanding it but: The whole EPPP thing is designed to benefit Premiership teams and the Football League only voted for it (46 to 22 with 4 non votes) because the FA threatened to withdraw funding for youth development (vote yes or we pull...

Re: Under 23"s Supposedly not ready for first team football.

It seems ludicrous to me that a Premier League club would shut down it's academy, they can easily afford it. Hopefully the FA look into the reasons why they would shut down their academy because if they want England to a force at the International stage, they can't have a scenario where a top divis...

Re: Under 23"s Supposedly not ready for first team football.

He showed as much promise as half a dozen other players from that youth side but as captain was singled out for particularly high expectation.

Likewise Fosu on the basis of a 60 minute 1st team cameo.

Re: Under 23"s Supposedly not ready for first team football.

From what I heard, Kuhl got disillusioned with the game. Whilst that clearly suggests a problem with his attitude, its a far cry from suggesting he's a billy big bollocks. I still find it odd that everyone also harks to this "golden" spell in the first team. He was competent, but didn't pa...

Re: Under 23"s Supposedly not ready for first team football.

Huddersfield's loss will undoubtedly be Bradford and Halifax's gain. Would we be the same boat without a Cat1 academy? How many of our academy graduates are currently signed to Premiership clubs? Sig, Hector, McCarthy, HRK, Hamer. Any more? I don't really include Long or Federici. That's still a pre...

Re: Under 23"s Supposedly not ready for first team football.

....but failing to match the hype. That's not their fault though, its down to unrealistic expectations maybe because of the graduation return of Pearce, Karacan, Sigurdsson, HRK, Church and Obita (half a team basically) in the space of 3 years. I'd rather we had realistic expectations. Currently we ...

Re: Under 23"s Supposedly not ready for first team football.

Kuhl looked competent in his first team runouts but didn't look any better than Jake Taylor or Ryan Edwards. Tanner spent 2 years on the bench at Plymouth and Fosu struggled to get games in League 2. Quite a lot of players "don't look out of place" when they get a runout with the first te...

Re: Speculation - Rickie Lambert and/or Giuseppe Rossi

According to transfermarket, Rossi is injured.

In fact, looking at Transfermarket, the best two options appear to be either Welliton, who probably wouldn't get a work permit, or Simon Church.

Re: Rival Watch

Don't get me wrong, I'm not he last person to defend Redknapp but most small clubs of their stature were struggling financially in the late 80's and early 90's. I don't see Bournemouth's financial struggles at that time being particularly severe or out of context with the most of the football league...

Re: Rival Watch

Think is, 'Arry built a reputation as a decent manager doing well on a shoestring at Bournemouth. Obviously that reputation has been subsequently been tarnished by Used Car Salesman 'Arry but I honestly think it's more a case of being yesterday's man. Footballs moved on from the days I of 5 pints, f...

Re: The idiots of Twitter thread

Yeah, slightly misread the article, it was the TV ban on shirt advertising it had an impact on lifting. Obviously having Hitachi, JVC or Hafnia on the kit in 4 inch white letters was easy to remove but it's a different problem when the sponsor's logo forms a huge part of the kit design.

Re: The idiots of Twitter thread

Not a geek but I did collect Panini stickers as a kid so the Coventry kit clearly stood out to me and a hell of a lot of my peers. With the recent relaxing of rules regarding sponsorship logos on kits over the last couple of seasons, it's been referenced a lot recently.

Re: The idiots of Twitter thread

WSC is hardly a fanzine any more and just about the only football magazine about that asks serious questions about the state of the game. The Coventry Talbot kit was designed to circumvent the ban on shirt advertising in the early 80's, to the point that Jimmy Hill considered changing the club's nam...

What would you two do if someone identified you to eachother on the concourse at a game? Not be fussed, the bloke is irrelevant to my life - more than open about who I am. A lot of people from HNA know me already anyway. In case you don't @ away games massive flag saying; Matt / Reading FC/ RG20. N...

Re: The idiots of Twitter thread

The Coventry kit would be fairly common knowledge to any football fan over 45.

The Carlisle kit was mentioned in an article in this month's WSC.
