Re: Worst Reading games

Three games in quick succession v Walsall around 2000 and the cuptie with Welling in 1990 that dragged on over four games - both the games at EP were goalless. Two batches of awfulness. I remember the Welling cup ties and attended the 2 mind numbing home games. Welling were just trying to milk it f...

Re: Worst ever Reading FC X1

Old Man Andrews None of the suggestions can be taken seriously unless you have selected Paul Brayson up front.

He was certainly considered for a place in the starting line up but due to the amount of front men already in the team, I decided to put him on the bench.

AthleticoSpizz Wow ‘oldun’ way out of the usual tick box

But so true in most parts

Brilliant contribution ✔️

Thanks, but the sad thing was that i couldn't pull a player from Jack Mansell's very attractive footballing team.

Worst ever Reading FC X1

This is a team that will get you relegated all the way to league 2 or worse. All players selected need to have been part of the team. Picking a player that perhaps made an appearance in a 'Sherpa Van Trophy" cup tie does not count, these players have to have had a run in the team to be selected...

Re: Best XI in your lifetime. (Excluding the 106 team)

This team is probably more of my romantic best X1, Playing where the manager tells them, and maybe a little out of position, but here goes anyway; Steve Death, Matty Robinson Darius Wdowczyk Mathew Upson Colin Meldrum Kevin Bremner Dick Spiers Brynjar Gunnarson Gylfi sigurdsson Robin friday Trevor M...

Thanx for that Brox I will take great delight in reminding my Pompey supporting work colleague (and ex 657 crew member) of that fact  It was the days before hooligan gangs adorned themselves with names, you were just your 'Clubs Name Boot Boys'. Reading didn't really have much of a mob, and mo...

Re: Ray Hiron

I was at Fratton Park early in the 76/77 season when Ray, now playing for us, hobbled off injured, to a massive ovation and chanting of his name from the Portsmouth Faithful.

Re: Finish the season, in 56 days?

The season has lost it’s momentum now. The campaign is a mess. Unfair advantages and disadvantages have been gained by various clubs with the closedown.
The best bet in my opinion is to call it a day on this season and hope that we can start again this coming August.

Barney 32 years ago today !! Enough said :D

Yep. Very fond memories. I think the game was on a Sunday. We totally outnumbered the Luton fans that day. Hard to believe it was that long ago.

Agreed. Enough is enough. We’ve had it every year for 14 years now, no more.

Re: Elm Park Years

In terms of attendances at EP, whilst an incredible 24,046 (the official recorded attendance) squeezed in for the Southampton cup game in 1978 - I was there and remember just seeing a sea of heads - just how they got 33,042 in there for the record gate against Brentford in 1927 in a largely 'the sa...

Re: Elm Park Years

Think we had 25000 at home to Saints in the League cup in the early 80’s? From memory Kevin Keegan was supposed to be playing for them, hence the crowd. But he did not play    . I was there natch Edit: it was nil nil and we lost the replay 2-0, big away crowd too. It was nothing t...

Re: Elm Park Years

The replay was during the days of the three-day week and regular power cuts, Reading v Blyth Spartans took place on 19 January 1972. The three-day week ran from January to March 1974. My memory is that it was the National Coal Miners strike was in full flow leading to power cuts and the game was pl...

Re: BFTT Barnsley

There's a recurring theme here;
Reading, away from home, in Yorkshire, on a cold wet night in midweek, and not doing very well.
It's been the same for the last 10 years or so. Maybe there is some mileage in the old 'Southern Softies' cliche.

Er, we won 2-1, I don’t recall a moment’s worry and you’re not too good on apostrophes either. Maybe back then I just took the violence for granted? We won did we, my apologies, time plays games with your memories. The violence? If you don't recall that then i think you must have dark glasses and a...

Anyone remember non league Wycombe Wanderers away in 1976? Football hooliganism was at it’s height and the whole of Buckinghamshire, some Oxford, some Spurs and a sprinkling of various clubs turned up and beat the fcuk out of us on the terraces. On the pitch.......we lost again. Er, we won 2-1, I d...

Re: FA Cup away day memories

Hendon away in ( I think ) 1975.

A load of Tottenham fans turned up and the brawling went on all game.

On the field we lost 1-0.
