Remember it well. I did 'The Fans' Verdict' that night. (My 40th.) (50th wasn't so good - 7 March 2010. Well it was alright until just after half-time...)

Is that 1-3 game at the Manor the night of the famous "are you really worse than him?" chant as they changed keeper at half time? Judging by the fumble for our second goal it would seem to be about right. A hugely entertaining night that one!

EDIT: Yes it was http://www.royals.org/matdoc/070300.html

Happy times

Paul Lundin and Andre Arendse. Chain-smoking Paul Powell scored Oxford's opener, not a bad effort either. but those goals scored are embarrassingly easy. Oxford were truly sh*te back then, even more embarrassing is the fact they beat us at the Madejski in the November...

Complete Big Match video - Reading vs Arse January 87

by Ark Royal » 22 Jul 2015 21:53

Found this complete video on twohundredpercent.net of the Big Match from January 1987 featuring extended FA Cup highlights of Reading vs Arse. Also includes the Shite vs Pox.

Loads of bad caps and poor upper-lip slug balancing acts.

I went to a Birmingham away game and one of the strikers was dropped, so went along and sat with the away fans. Think we lost 2-1 though.

Alan Sedunary has just passed me this gem of a link, with the question "How many would have been sent off in the final goalmouth scramble?" Hopefully he won't mind me sharing it with a wider audience.

Joe Duckworth certainly earned his corn that day!

23,703 at a snowbound Elm Park on 16th Feb 1929. We were 17th in the 2nd tier at the time,

No idea if this is the earliest newsreel from EP, but quality is excellent for the day, so would have been a "professional" recording.

That's great isn't it. Duckworth was renowned for his bravery and you can see why - keepers got no protection at all! As far as I know it's the earliest match footage from Elm Park, though there is a film around of a military sports day from the First World War.

Just to update, the link to the EP video v Villa in 1929 came from Chris Lee's excellent site:

A must see for all things RFC related.

Footage from that Villa game was on Pathe News so they would be the film-makers (they only broadcast 45 seconds, though). Reading's other known appearances on Pathe News were the 1927 FA Cup semi-final and a 1935 game, so this is the oldest football footage I know of from Elm Park.

However, there is footage of a fund-raising sports day at Elm Park held during World War 1. Someone posted a link to it a few years ago, but I didn't make a note of the link at the time, and haven't been able to track it down since.

Some bizarre action going on, but interesting to see the ground as it was then http://www.britishpathe.com/video/novel ... query/1915

No substitutes either, so the incentive was there.

Nobble the keeper, get sent off, it's 10 versus 10 but one side has no proper keeper...

I was one of the 23,703.

Did some gear with the Scorpions in the Spread Eagle after the game, was top.
