Pogrebnyak targets top eight

by maffff » 21 Aug 2012 10:12

Pavel Pogrebnyak may have only been at Reading for a matter of weeks, but the striker has already stated his firm desire to secure a top-eight finish with his new club this season.

The Russia striker scored six goals to guide Fulham to a ninth place finish last season after joining from Stuttgart in January, but hopes to go at least one better after turning down a deal at the West London club to join newly-promoted Reading on a free transfer.

Pogrebnyak played 77 minutes of Reading's opening day draw with Stoke City, and the 28-year-old feels that the club should have greater ambitions than simply Premier League survival.

"I'd like the team to fight for a top-eight position but we have to be realistic," the striker told http://www.soccer.ru.

"In order to get in the best eight we have to win not only at home but also our away games.

"I don't want to even think about fighting in the second part of the table."

 by that logic I'd like the team to fight for the Champions League places............. but we have to be realistic.

We should aim to enter as a country in our own right for the world cup. And then win it.

But we have to be realistic.

I'm a pessimist, true, but I do worry that Pog may get a bit unenthusiastic about playing for us when we get stuck in a relegation scrap. Hoping Brian's fabled man-management skills are able to get the best out of him.

And if he underperforms, a pre-season tour of Mexico and an ice axe to the head!

It's the same with the recent "Fulham didn't want me" stories. The headline looks like a big story, then you see a vid of the interview and realize those are his best words that he can fit together. :x

He'll get there...

Well if he wants that he better pull his finger out of his arse, get fit and start looking like a Premiership striker. He was puffing and wheezing like a Sunday League player after a night out on Saturday. Did not play much better than one either........................

We seemed to be able to get the ball to Roberts' feet last season, why can't we try doing that this season?

That was at least in part due to Roberts's skill at backing into the defender so he can bring down a long ball with his feet rather than his chest/ head IMO

I like his ambition. If he had come out and said our goal this season was just to survive, I'd feel a bit meh..

I think we should aim for 17th.

But you have to be realistic.

I would like Pog to aim to be in the top 8 goalscorers, that would help us get where we need to be.
