Simod Cup - 25th anniversary

by Tony Le Mesmer » 01 Mar 2013 21:57

Have the club got anything planned to celebrate 25 years since our Simod Cup Final win? Or as it happened pre Mad Stad era, is that a silly question?

Anyway, relive that great day here. I will get the whole game up over the next few weeks.

Was certainly the biggest and bestest thing that had ever happened to lil Reading back then.

No doubt, it will go unheralded by the club of today. Maybe a two page spread in the next program?

Unbelievable that we beat (with the exception of Bradford) all Division One teams (pre-prem) en-route to and at Wembley.

All childhood fantasies (with the exception of Felicity Kendall) were exceeded that day!

I thang you

My first ever football match.

Was saying last Saturday that I feel like the fan version of Bobby Mihailov. "Oh this is good dad, can we come back for the next game?"

25 years of bullshit later, thanks a lot.

Agreed. Except I gave Felicity a knee-trembler on the train back after.

Full house.......

At other grounds I've seen them do a lap of honour with the trophy, which would be a nice touch before kick-off.

as much chance of that happening (under the current regimen) as me getting a run out against Man U

You might want to clean your boots off!

Back on topic, I think I've of still got a copy of The Sun from 1988 with us all over the back page following that historic victory!

It still annoys me that we couldn't defend the trophy the next season.

It still puzzles me why Smilie and Bailie were dropped next game

I think we're setting ourselves up for a bit of mockery if we make too much of a big deal about the 1988 Simod Cup.

Why?
It may have been the first cup that we ever won apart from the Berks & Bucks Cup.
As well as being a marvellous day out when people went who had never seen us play before or since it was a cracking result in beating the same side that then went out and beat Arsenal in the League Cup final.

No way the level of expectation at the club was a lot different to now. For anyone who was there it was a day that will never be forgoten.

Richard Wickson of the ex players association put together an excellent 20th anniversary dinner in 2008 where just about the whole Simod Cup winning team attended but had to hold it in the Holiday Inn on Basingstoke Road as the slub would not allow them to use a function room at the stadium. Seems to me the club are in denial about anything that happened before 1998. At the time of the Simod Cup win it was probably the highlight of 117 years of Reading FC history and was easily the best day of my life and having talked to the players, the best day of theirs too! I wish the club would continue to celebrate this momentous occasion but it's like it never happened to the current owners.......
