Hound yeah, its possibly true.
But you are also committing yourself to 3.5 years of wages etc. by signing them up.
I get they are not going to be on 40k a week, but even if so its still a burden on the club. Its not the fact they are getting contracts that is a little strange but the length of them
just on a couple of those players - Rinomhota has been injured all year, Watson likewise. Richards would have probably played a few more games but for injury as well. Smith certainly would have.
Not saying they would have been first team regulars, but basically the 4 players nearest the first team have all had fairly lengthy injury lay offs

Snowflake Royal On the committing to their wages front... when have we recently showed any sense in the awarding of contracts given our insane wage bill? If we toss out contracts to players with injury issues who are coming to the end of their career, why wouldn't we commit to much smaller wages for youngsters over a longer period?

Snowflake RoyalHound its an interesting policy this.
I can't remember such long contracts being given out to players who aren't really in first team contention at this stage
Obvs be absolutely delighted if 4 or 5 of these lads come through and play regularly. But on first thoughts, they do seem a little excessively long. There must be a genuine thought that they will be in the first team squad next year, which must surely mean we will be having some sort of clear out at the end of the year (no bad thing)
Anyway, congrats to Smith. Some potential there certainly and a good attitude etc
Alternative theory:
We are tying them down to long-term contracts to ensure to leave and get first team league football a club has to pay for them so we get a fee and this will making the Academy self-funding. We don't really have any strong plans to include them in genuine first team plans other than as back up bench warmers and critical emergency starters.
We just don't seem to have really made any effort to bring Academy players through under Stam (except Kelly - and even he's struggled this season with the addition of Clement, Edwards and Bacuna) . Yes, a fair few have had debuts or sat on the bench, but even last year Watson didn't get as many chances as his performances merited, even taking into account Gunter's ever-presence. Richards could and should have been used more pre-injury this season. Smith could have got more minutes easily. Andressen likewise. Dickie looked to be being prepped for the first team in pre-season and then was shipped out quietly. Hyam never even got that close. Both of those were quality defenders from what I saw.
Rinomhota hasn't really featured since a bit of a cameo. Loader could have had more chance, Holsgrove and East not had a shout (though it's early days for them to be fair), Barrett hasn't had a game since McDermott was in charge iirc. Nothing for Frost I don't think. Novakovitch has been farmed out on loan. Stacey and Fosu were ditched.

that was kind of my original point. Seems a little odd chucking out such big contracts - not sure as to why. Had a bit whinge about it on another thread

Hound Some new chap in charge of the academy - Ged Roddy (nope, no idea either)
Still BT and Gourlay saying the right things about it etc
Good luck to him in continuing the work done by Dolan and Herron

Look on the bright side, that suggests they're ready for the first team.
