I remember sometime after he starred in that FA Youth Cup run reading an old post from the start of that season, made I presume by SCIAG, saying he was considered to be a right back. So maybe he only emerged as a right winger that season because we were short in that position and right back is his best position? Only ever seen him on the wing so don't know, but at Exeter and Luton I think he's only ever been played as a right-back/right wing-back.

I was sad to see him go, but couldn't at the time see where he was going to play. Was a big fan so may be gutted to see him at another Championship club, but thought the Antonio sale was right at the time (and this feels fairly similar to me) so can't really complain about us letting him go.

Rinomhota may get a chance this season however, looked good when I saw him last season

Noticed the other day that the u21s aren't in the Checkatrade Trophy this season. I wonder if that is the club's decision or are we deemed not to have a strong enough academy now? Ie the stronger teams maybe now want to play?

Also, very unusual to find the U23s playing on a Saturday at the Mad Stad before the first team, but can completely see the logic behind it. It seems its designed to keep the u23s on the same training programme as the first team and allow for more movement between the sides. I'm sure its good for the club too for the Mad Stad to be used when the first team are away (and London Irish aren't playing either).

Invitations to the Checkatrade dependent on 1st team league finish. More PL teams involved now, Arsenal competing for 1st time. Only 4 spots for Championship clubs, 3 of those taken by relegated clubs. Middlesbrough took the other.

No change according to Flashscore (which is very good for U23 games when the club's twitter aren't providing updates). Doesn't look like we've made any subs either.

Quick ratings:

Driscoll 5 - allowed first goal under his body and didn't have much else to do.
Howe 5 - got caught out a few times but also rode a few challenges well
Holmes 6 - strong and composed but had a tendency to overplay, and got caught up the pitch a few times
McIntyre 7 - some really good covering tackles and double tackles
Medford-Smith 5 - movement mostly poor and seemed vulnerable
Rinomhota 6 - one very good run and broke up play well but lacked cutting edge
East 7 - kept things ticking over
Frost 7 - amazing finish for the goal and worked very hard. Still not sure what his position is (played on the right).
Barrett 8 - overweight, immobile, and unfit, but played some excellent passes including two in the build up to Frost's goal. Hit the bar from a free kick and tested the keeper a couple more times. Like a cross between Caskey and Drenthe.
Loader 7 - started very brightly, helped build moves well, good movement off the ball, and an excellent goal. Less effective in the second half.
House 7 - industrious, won the ball in dangerous positions and created space for the midfield.

Sub:
Coleman 6 - one good pass up the line, gained and retained possession effectively.

On the basis of that I'd say the only ones who look like threatening the first team this season could be McIntyre and Loader. Barrett really needs to get sorted out - at this level he's good enough that the U23s can afford to carry him, but he'd need a team built around him to survive in the Conference.

Holsgrove not playing again, presumably injured.

Thanks for the write up SCIAG. Be interesting to see whether Barrett gets a loan move in the next few weeks, especially if there were any scouts there today. Suspect he's going to need to get fitter first though.

There were a lot of people in suits in the boxes today so suspect lots of clubs were looking for loanees.

Hopefully some bold manager thinks Barrett's worth the risk and he has a successful loan. Seems much more likely he'll just repeat last season until his contract expires.

The u23s are playing their first match in the PL International Cup tonight away to Leicester, 7pm ko. I was convinced this was due to be played yesterday afternoon :?

Currently 1-0 up, Coleman heading in Barrett's corner in 28th minute. Went to Leicester's twitter to see if they had any team news for us, they didn't but are showing the game live so will watch the 2nd half :)

Just seen the goal, Coleman unmarked but powerful header.

Finished 2-0 Loader won a penalty and had it saved 5 mins from the end.

Few quick thoughts.
Think it was Micky Adams co-commentating.
Southwood was in goal and Sidoel came on for Coleman midway through the 2nd half. From that point on we were in control and should have won by more. Hard to believe we are the Division 2 team and Leicester are Division 1 I think. Wasn't your typical youth game. Competitive and not much passing around the back from either side plus a good tempo, enjoyed watching it.
