Team For Wigan

by SCIAG » 15 Apr 2014 12:34

Leigertwood's suspension and injuries to Obita, McCleary and Williams could put us right back in trouble. I liked how we looked in 4-1-4-1 though. Any word on those injuries?

Pessimistic side:
-------------------McCarthy----------------
Gunter----Pearce---Morrison------Bridge
-----------------Hector---------------------
HRK-----Taylor-------McAnuff----Drenthe
----------------Pogrebnyak-----------------

Subs: Feds, Gorkss, Kelly, Tshibola, Tanner, Blackman, Le Fondre

Best case scenario:

-----------------McCarthy-----------------
Gunter-----Pearce----Morrison----Obita
-----------------Hector---------------------
McCleary---Williams--Guthrie--McAnuff
------------------Pogrebnyak---------------

With Karacan in for Morrison (and Hector and Guthrie dropping back), that would be an excellent side and is what we should look to build next season's team around. Not that Pogrebnyak is likely to stay.

I doubt Tanner and Tshibola will travel as they will be on U21 duty on Saturday.

McCarthy/Feds
Gunter
Morro
Obita
Hector
Williams if fit
Blackman.

Pretty much the rest of the team can oxf*rd off far as I'm concerned.

Because an U21 game is always way more important than a playoff campaign ?
That's even if the U21's were playing, which they're not.

Apart from that cup final they're playing in on Saturday.

Before you get on that very high horse, try checking out your facts. Just a thought.

I assume that we will try to win every one of the next 4 games so defending in depth will not achieve enough although Sparta's team is very much how we play anyway with Pog totally isolated up front.
Any time I see HRK as a starter it makes me realise that we have very little hope of winning as we play for about 60 minutes with 10 men and then he gets substituted.

It worked at Leeds, he was quite effective there as a striker and wasn't substituted until the 86th minute.

I was prompted to check the games where he has started and the stats are as follows:-
Started 16 games
Wins 6
Draws 6
Lost 4
In 3 of those wins we have only gone on to win after he has been subbed (drawing at the time)
In 2 of our other drawn game we were winning before he came as sub

I know stats never tell the complete story but our record with him starting is IMHO not very good.

Over 48 games that makes72 points so look at Leicester , Burnley, Derby and QPR who already have more points than that and the season isn't over yet.
See also my notes about the other games where we have lost points when he is on the pitch.
I admit to being biased-did you make it to GCSE maths?

If Williams, Obita and Mcleary are injured we might as well give Wigan the three points. If not same team. However Bridge looked shaky in the first half.

That's a litle bit different from league winning form and is nearer to mid-table mediocrity than being Championship winners.
