Games You Wish You Hadn't Missed

by arthurfondrelli » 13 Feb 2015 13:28

Inspired by the best atmosphere thread (sort of), what games do you really regret missing, and why did you miss them?

Leicester (A) 05/06 - didn't think we would get promoted that day so decided against it

Southampton (A) 11/12 - couldn't get a train home after the game

Nottm Forest (H) 11/12 - couldn't get a train home after the game

West Brom (H) 12/13 - was keeping up with it on a beach in Barbados

Southampton away April 12 - Mrs on maternity, funds too tight.
West Ham away March 12 - see above.
Bristol City away September 11 - saving for maternity.
Tranmere Rovers away May 95 - old man wouldn't let this 13yo go.
Tranmere Rovers home May 95 - see above.
Brentford away 02 - university.
Brighton home 94 - living in Germany.
Wolves home 96 - grounded.

That's about it really. Some pretty big games in there that I've missed

Southampton away 2012 - Agreed to go to a gig with my ex-girlfriend who turned out to be very crazy before the game was moved (if I remember correctly). The gig happened to be Frank Turner who I hate with a passion and even more so now...miserable.

Also moved to France in September 2005 and came back July 2008 so missed the majority of our 2 best seasons.

69/70 Reading 6 Barnsley 2 - playing for East Berks schoolboys and missed Les Chappell's wonder header.
69/70 Reading 6 Barrow 3 - grounded for putting chewing gum in my brother's hair while he was asleep. :|

1st January 2007, Reading 6 - 0 West Ham. Owing to my daughter being born the day before, thought I should have been alright to go as it wasn't like she was the first born or anything, but apparently that isn't acceptable.

Still, at least the match wasn't particularly memorable.

Simod Cup Semi Final V Coventry, working in London and couldn't get away in time

Cup win at Liverpool, only myself to blame, made a conscious decision not to go

I missed two home games in the last 8 years due to work commitments and an unsympathetic manager who would come out with "it's not man utd or a cup final". He was one of these football fans who doesn't support a club, more or a tourist who follows teams on the tv.

Those games were: Blackpool and Burley, but I can't remember which years. I think we lost both games but that wasn't the point.

Start of season 83-84, a new era, a new chairman and a new striker in a new division and a 6-2 win v Stockport for the first home game.

By the way whatever did become of Frank Waller?

Ark Royal 69/70 Reading 6 Barnsley 2 - playing for East Berks schoolboys and missed Les Chappell's wonder header.

The Barrow game was my first Reading game. Assumed all future games would have as many goals.

Newport away when we had 13 straight wins at the beginning of the season.
Leicester away 2005/6
Liverpool away when we won in the FA Cup

I was at the Tranmere game when Friday scored that goal, so it makes up for some of the missed games. The Plymouth 4-3 game as well, and yes I did stay to the end !!

Arsenal 1971/72 - had to take part in Cub Scout drama competition instead
Northampton 1975/76 - grounded
Tranmere 1975/76 - deemed too young for night games
Colchester 1999/2000 - Network Rail failed to get me within 180 miles of the stadium by kick-off time, despite publishing an ETA at Reading of 10:54 am. Only home game missed in 17 years.
Cardiff p-o away 2010/11 - couldn't get time off work. May not have tried hard enough because I thought we would lose.

Tranmere (H) 5-0 : Parents silver anniversary. Meal at The George instead
Newport (A) 0-2 : Student living in the Midlands and skint
Coventry (H) 1-1 : As above + mates 21st birthday, so stuck in a Birmingham night club.
Brentford (A) 1-1 : Only season in past 20 or so didn't have a season ticket
Barnsley (H) 1-3. Odd one, but only home league game missed in 10 years due to being stuck in a school governor meeting. As a consequence, governor meetings are now held on a Thursday.

+1 for So'ton away 2012

Due to finances I decided I should only go to two out of three away games in a row, so I sacked off a trip to Saints to see us away at West Ham and Brighton instead. Luckily the first of those two games turned out to be a classic, but the second was a proper ropey away win, and so I still regret that decision.

Brentford 2002 away - was 15, didn't have much of a chance of getting a ticket, my dad knew some people that might have been able to get a few, but we ended up spending the weekend in a caravan in Devon instead. Because that's what dreams are made of.

Forest away 4-3 win 2012
West Ham away 4-2 win 2012 - moved house that day

All 5 or so games of the 106 season that I missed. Can't remember now how many, but one of them was the Luton defeat, another was the Stoke 3-1 win, another was Glen Little's lob at Plymouth

Newcastle 2-1 win away in 2013 - I've seen us lose 3 times at SJP with Newcastle scoring 3 on each occasion. The first time I don't go, we win.

The cup win at Anfield. I had swine flu and the most I could do was get downstairs to watch it on the telly.

Man City in 1968 or 69? can't remember which. it was a mid-week evening cup match and my dad wouldn't take me as I was "too small and wouldn't see anything". So I missed out on watching Bell, Summerbee, Lee etc give us a right 7-0 pasting.

Missed the first ever game at the Mad Stad due to work commitments, which was a shame as it was probably our best performance with Burns in charge.

Missed Leicester Away (06). Decorating the living room
