Tony Spearing

by blueroyals » 27 Feb 2015 12:39

Has joined as Head of Recruitment: http://www.readingfc.co.uk/news/article/tony-spearing-named-as-reading-chief-scout-2300174.aspx

Can't say I'm surprised to see Steve Shorey depart after the quality of signings over the last 5 years

Glad to see European scouting mentioned. The rise of teams like Swansea, Southampton, etc. wouldn't be possible if they limited themselves to UK recruitment like we have done in recent years

Agreed, we've been limited to UK recruitment for far too long. Apart from Anton Ferdinand, Danny Williams, Jure Travner, Yakubu, Daniel Carrico, Royston Drenthe, Pavel Pogrebnyak of course.

:| he is chief scout and is still at the club, this guy will be head of recruitment and will focus on European scouting where as Shorey is focused on domestic players.

But why not jump to conclusions

But all of those players, with the exception of Williams and Carrico, had played in the UK before they joined us.

Sad to see Steve Head go (I presume?), he was Reading through and through.

Our gambles under him most didn't come off, but then we didn't make many. We've largely switched from relying on cheap signings who overperform to filling gaps with Academy players.

I'll reserve judgement until more details of this 'backroom shuffle' come into the public domain. I can't say I'm overly impressed with shuffling in any room.....

A scout only recommends players. A manager decides whether to sign them or not, for all we know Shorey might have spotted some great players.

It's a fukking great job to be fair.
You get to travel around europe watching football and having a great time confident in the knowlege that anyone you recommend won't be signed because the club do not have a pot to piss in.
As long as you suggest a couple of player a week scouted from your games of football manager you could probably dispense with going to the games at all and just go on the piss instead.

He wasn't head hunted, was told to leave along with other staff to cut cost back in August.

Bloody hell that does sound amazing

I wish I'd seen the job advert for this. Id have stuck in a form, got a lot of experience having visited a total 42 football grounds and watching a lot of sport on TV.

With our cash issues as they are, would we not have been better off hiring the bloke who does the player ratings for Football Manager?

Many years goo, I went to Majorca for a long weekend, and watched Real Mallorca play Celta Vigo.

Flying back the next day I discovered the guy sat next to me (who looked vaguely familiar) had been to the game as well, scouting the Mallorca striker who had scored the winning goal for Man Utd; he asked what I thought of the guy and I said I didn't think he would suit PL football as he was lazy, didn't track back etc. The guy said he thought the same so was crossing him off the list.

I asked him how he got such a fabulous job, and he said it help's if your brother is the Manager! It was Martin Ferguson, brother of (the then) Alex Ferguson.

Here's a scouting story for you.

Drinking in a beach front bar on the South Coast of France during WC98.

Playing table football and this pissed up short bloke rolls up to play next. He looked familiar, then I clocked it was Kenny Sansom. Me, "What are you doing here then, following England?", him -something like "No i'm scouting for England. I'm supposed to be at The Italy Cameroon game tonight (which was on the bar tv at the time) but I couldn't be bothered, thought id get pissed and watch it on the telly instead".

Suffice to say I wasn't the slightest bit surprised to hear of his recent downfall.
