The Daily Mail are so accurate !!! Drenthe has been sold and I would be amazed if Anton Ferdinand was on bigger money than say Danny Williams or HRK. Take this with a pinch of salt....

But how do we know the club aren't subsidising any of Drenthe's wages?

we might well be, it's quite common these days to pay a contribution to a departed players wages, and ferdinand might well be on big money we have no idea

You cant have a go at the guy for getting a payrise. Bloody hell! I expect everyone on here who says this is unfair to turndown the next payrise they are offered.

Comment by one of the Readers... in Swindon Reading a club full of the new breed fan, who only decided to support Reading once they reached the premier league. The fans who had been loyal for years during the bad times pushed out. Really they are a League 1 or 2 side.

No mention of Drenthe in the article. It's unusual for a club to subsidise a player's wage beyond the contract he had with them, wasn't Drenthe only contracted with us until this summer?

A wage rise for Pogrebnyak, if true, is the last thing we needed. £55k is nearly three times what we were paying our highest earners before Zingarevich showed up.

It seems unlikely we're paying Ferdinand very much given how tight finances were when he was signed and his long unemployment.

Maybe it's been renamed under a new sponsorship deal?

He only scored seven goals in 33 matches last season but Pavel Pogrebnyak will receive a pay rise from Reading this summer to make him the only Championship striker earning more than £2.5million a year.

Aware that he had better start justifying his huge salary, he has already asked team-mate and Wales international Hal Robson-Kanu if they can swap shirt numbers next season so the Russian can wear the No 9 to bring himself a change of luck.

Pogrebnyak was guaranteed a pay rise entering the final year of his contract when he joined Reading in 2012, when they were a Premier League club.

Since then, The Royals have been relegated and finished only 19th in The Championship last season. Even so, Pogrebnyak's deal is watertight and he will earn £55,000-a-week at the Majdeski Stadium next season – around double what former Spurs and England striker Darren Bent will be getting at Derby County.

With big wages also being paid out to Anton Ferdinand and former Real Madrid and Everton winger Royston Drenthe, it means manager Steve Clarke will be seriously restricted in the transfer window despite the team reaching the FA Cup semi-finals where they were defeated by Arsenal.

You can't blame Pogrebnyak for agreeing the contract offered to him when he signed for Reading from Fulham.

At the time, the club were splashing out millions under the ownership of Russian Anton Zingarevich and Pogrebnyak's salary, although reduced after relegation, included an incremental increase this summer. It has allowed him to live in a prime area of London close to Chelsea's Stamford Bridge.

He wants to do much better than last season.

'I’ve already agreed a trade-in with Hal Robson-Kanu who played at No 9 (last season), while I was No 7,' said Pogrebnyak.

'I have never changed shirt numbers before but I don't want another rubbish season. The Championship is the hardest league I have ever been in. It is like Gladiators fighting.'

With QPR already shedding big-earners like Joey Barton and Hull City tipped to sell off prize assets such as Tom Huddlestone, Pogrebnyak could start the new season as the second best-paid player outside the Premier League behind Fulham's Scott Parker who earns around £75,000-a-week.

Pogrebnyak previously played for Spartak Moscow, Zenit St Petersburg and Stuttgart.

Seems yet another clause set by our previous wonderful owner. You have to say why would we give him a pay rise in his final year, perhaps he has also had pay rises for the other years?

all true to be fair

Not really... why do you believe Reading are a League 1 or 2 club (this in itself is a totally idiotic comment and opinion).

The majority of clubs who get any type of promotion will have a large increase in attendance.

The same one as told them we "spent big" (although technically... wages), that Drenthe is still on our books or that Ferdinand is a top earner, I guess.

It all makes sense now. He always played unless he was injured. HRK Always in the squad no matter how he played.

There Agents deserve a pat on the back, a great bit of Business. Superb Contracts.

Drenthes contract would have naturally expired by now, no way we are subsidising it.
