New captain 2015/16

by TBM » 23 Jun 2015 10:08

So with Pearce gone and Jem on his way to Gala - who do we reckon will be the captain and vice captain?

I'm going for Gunter and Williams

Until we know the new signings there is no point speculating.

Will we have a 'vice captain' ? Not sure we've had one in the past have we ? We've just had to have stand ins because the official captain was injured. Seems a pointless role really.

Indeed, what is the point ?

If your captain isn't playing in a game you just tell someone who is playing to chose ends at kick off. You don't need an official appointment preseason and a reserved parking space.

On a related note who would be the vice vice captain? Essential if the other two are injured / dropped/ substituted

Do you actually know what a captain does, in sport?

Its not just someone who calls "heads" or "tails" :|

It's kind of different in each sport isn't it ?
With the role in football being much less significant than in rugby or cricket.
In football obviously the decision which way to kick is the key part of the job, but also I believe the captain has to be the first to argue with the ref over any decision they don't like and they also clap their hands a lot and shout things like 'eyes on', 'tight on your man' and 'good five lads' every so often.
Being able to fake sincere smiles when meeting sponsors and offering anodyne opinions at press conferences are also handy.

As Danny Williams is the best player at the club I've gone for him. That and the fact he's one of the few with fire in his belly.

For what it's worth, I think the captains job in football is a lot more behind the scenes than it is just the chest pumping we see on the pitch. Having enough leaders in any team is important though, especially when the going gets tough. I don't think we've had that over the last few years but Williams is one that seems to have the balls to try and influence others and not just go with the flow out on the pitch.

Obviously a cricket captain is more significant than in football but I'm not sure that's true for modern day Rugby where the coach seems to have become more important as the sport has become more professional.

I think there's a very good chance that Clarke will give the armband to one of his new signings. If not then I'd say Williams is the best bet from the current lot.

You guys have obviously not noticed the amount of arguments Williams seems to get involved in (a.k.a. start) with his own team-mates.

I'd suggest he doesn't go about communicating that passion in the best of ways, so probably not suitable.

Can I just ask how many times have you seen Anton Ferdinand play? My assumption is not a lot - your head must obviously have been in the sand 3 years ago when he actually did play football.

Several. You? If you took the time to speak to Sunderland fans then you might have a different perception of the lad. And what is it with you with heads in sand?

The secret footballer in one of his books said the club had a captain who was popular with the fans but not the players, The Captain is supposed to be the link between management/board and the players and he was more in with the management/board than the players, so much so that he wouldn't stand up for them on the issue of bonuses so the players boycotted the team photo and it was just the captain there on his own. I read into it as being Murty and Dave Kitson being the secret footballer.

Roy Keane would also go with young players to the manager/board and even negotiate for their pay rises if they didn't have an agent.

So anyway, there is more to it than just wearing an armband, shaking the refs hand and posing for a photo/tossing a coin, Maybe this is why we've had a "club captain" and a "on the pitch captain" in the past, although that was probably more down to one of them always being injured.

I vote Hal Robson-Kanu as he's surely got to be good at something and over-inflating his ego with the captains armband may see him play like he does for Wales.

I've no problem with a player getting into rows with his team mates if he's trying to get them to do their jobs better, especially when we're having such a poor season and so many of them weren't. A bit of fight and passion is what the side seemed to be missing.

I'm not sure he'll ever stay fit long enough to be the leader we really need though.

if we get mcshane or quinn i would bet on one of them getting it, think clarke wants to change the club from top to bottom and bringing in his own captain will very much help with that

Aaron Kuhl.

Hal Robson-Kanu as vice captain, because he is our longest-serving player (measured since first team debut).

Ferdinand is a good option if he's popular in the dressing room, probably the only member of the squad (other than Kuhl) who is a natural leader.

Big "no" to Williams. Another Matt Mills.

Nameless Will we have a 'vice captain' ? Not sure we've had one in the past have we ?

Think it was fairly common under Pards, Coppell and Rodgers, and last season Gunter was explicitly vice-captain under Adkins.

Murty was vice to Williams, then Sidwell took over when Murty got promoted, then Ingimarsson took over when Sidwell left, and then Pearce was appointed Ivar's vice captain by Rodgers. I don't remember us having one when Mills took over as captain through to Karacan being appointed.
