Worst Keeper

So just who is the worst keeper to ever fumble his way around a goalmouth for RFC?

Yeah, yeah, obvious response will be "Adam Federici". Followed by someone getting upset because Bond is there and moaning about "kneejerk, escapegoating already".

We were blessed with some truely awful keepers in the 90's and early 00's weren't we?

I don't think we appreciated how good our last decade has been...

Well, I can bear testimony that Ian Royal would not be Readings worst.

Colgan was awful but was only a loanee so it has to be Peter Van Der Kwaak.

Of anyone who who played more than a handful of games, i'd nominate Gary Phillips. Fat, moustachioed, butter fingered gimp.

It's a fight between Shepperd and Van der Kwaak and no one else I've seen comes close in 20 years.

On the few times that I saw him, Frank Parsons left a lot to be desired.....I voted " other"

Not that it particularly matters in the scheme of voting for VDK and sheps

Had to be Simon Sheppard. The whole of elm park would hold their breath whenever he attempted to go near the ball. It was sad to watch at times.

And no wonder we held our breath given how he would shout "away" whenever the opposition would cross half way.

I'll let Simple Simon off purely for a world class display in that match at Filbert Street against McGhoo.

Was it Colgan in goal away at Oxford midweek in the "Taxi for Terry" match? That was, quite simply, the most abysmal goalkeeping performance I have ever seen .... RFC or otherwise.

Van der Kwaak gets my vote, if only for the terrible back pass goal on the opening day of the 98/99 season away at Wrexham. Fortunately none of his other games stand out.

But even in that match he ended up crippling Adie Williams.

I know he only made a few appearances as a loanee but Colgan's debut(?) at Crewe remains burnt in my memory as one of the most abominal things ever to happen to Reading FC and I was around for Nigel Atkins' reign

I saw that. After 6 minutes Colgan comes out of his area to clear a pass back and missed the ball for Crewe to have a tap in. Reading lost the game 1-0 and Colgan never recovered in our eyes.

Colgan is now goal keeping coach at Huddersfield. Do you reckon he missed a few things on his CV ?

Hands down it's gotta be Colgan, I remember an awful performance from him at home to Port Vale, Easter 1997. Truly truly dreadful.

Anyone remember Colin Court? Made one appearance as an emergency in the early 80s home to Swindon, never seen again. Scored an own goal and was basically hopelessly out of his depth. I would say that, technically, he was the worst goalkeeper ever to wear the No.1 shirt, outfield players aside.

Can't really slate the poor chap too much though. He was on loan from a local non-league side and was very young I think. He was just a decent park footballer who bizarrely found himself in a football league match.

Simon Sheppard prevented an own goal from a backpass, away at Southend, by doing a bicycle kick. Legend.
