How Times Have Changed.

by Vision » 21 Oct 2015 07:58

This must have been posted before but I have to confess I've never seen it if it has.

A news report from 1983 about the proposed merger between Reading and Oxford. For particular interest to those who still think Madejski saved us from Maxwell.

Check out the Tilehurst Road training ground. Oh and the NF grafitti ;-)

Good find, a good watch thank you.

I had a day out with the club under the branfoot era as friends with his daughter and was staggered then that they trained on that Tarmac during the week particularly when it was raining.

They also trained at Prospect Park, so not all done on tarmac, also used elm park pitch

A great find.

Lovely camerawork panning from Broad Street to the floodlights at Elm Park.

agreed all round

Must admit I always thought of Elm Park being "miles" from the town centre, but that shot made it look close.

Mind you, I used to walk from Tilehurst.

ps surprised at how young Maurice Evans looked. Suave talker too.

3m10s in - I've still got that tie !

And the result of that game on 2nd May was Oxford United 1-2 Reading, shame there's no video footage of that game as that must have been very interesting on the terraces.

What did become of Frank Waller? He seems to have just faded away after he was legally prevented from completing the deal.

Great to see Reading town centre with the red Alder Valley bus and the old Reading Buses double decker - As mentioned above, great shot of Elm Park floodlights from town centre, Not a view I recall ever seeing myself and it does look a lot closer than it felt.

As a total Newbie glory hunter (moved to Reading Jan2000, first match March of that year, STH since August 2000) I’ve only read about the Thames Valley Royals idea.

Seeing it presented as a current news story (in this film) when the end result wasn’t known, I’m struck by just how devastating it must have felt. And what a total hero Roger Smee was. And that they never should have changed the Heelas name. (I still doggedly call it Heelas, and call Savacentre Savacentre too).

Vision Oh and the NF grafitti ;-)
I used to think this was the work of Nottingham Forest fans

To be fair, I was only 7 and I think may have mentioned it to my parents who likely thought it was easier to agree than try and explain the real meaning..... You'd think they'd learn after I sang "Eeney meeney miney mo, catch a N by the toe" at primary school without even knowing what a N was (my Nan, who isn't racist but comes from the bygone era taught us it as kids)

I can vividly remember having to go to a Kid's Xmas Party at the top of the Civic Offices, as my Nan worked there, that I really didn't want to go to as Reading were at home - late 80's I think. In the end, my Nan managed to find a pair of binoculors and I just about managed to watch the game through these from the top floor, so the ground was definitely a lot closer to town then it always seemed.

Marvellous stuff. Roger Smee and Frank Waller.... heroes.

And Heelas always, and always will be, called Heelas in the DHH household.

Errr, isn't Calcot Sava Centre still Sava Centre?
