Reading have sacked manager Steve Clarke.

The Scot saw his side beaten 1-0 at home by QPR last night and getreading.co.uk understands he was summoned in for a meeting with the club's board this morning and told he was being dismissed.

The news comes just a fortnight after Clarke alienated himself from large sections of the Reading fans by holding talks over a possible move to Championship rivals Fulham.

He ultimately decided to remain with Royals, claiming he felt it was the better option, but for many supporters the damage had been done.

They made their feelings well known to the Scot immediately after the final whistle last night when a chorus of boos and abuse rang out around Madejski Stadium.

And the club’s board, who were also angered by Clarke’s decision to hold talks over a possible switch to Craven Cottage, have now decided it is time to make a change.

Speaking immediately after Clarke had rejected Fulham, Reading chief executive Nigel Howe warned Clarke that he would now be judged on results.

And last night’s defeat, a fourth in seven games for Clarke, was the final straw - despite him claiming he is still the man for the job.

Thank oxf*rd, now he can go to Fulham without worrying about us pricing him out. Also gives the new man almost a month to identify his targets.

I'd be indifferent, I'd love him to come back but I'd hate a bad second spell to dirty his reputation at the club, sort of like Dalglish at Liverpool.

He could get us relegated and still have god like status!

Best manager we've ever had.

I wonder who applied for the job when he was flirting with Fulham, it wouldn't surprise me if they had someone pretty much ready to step in already.

Probably my least favourite Reading manager since I've been a supporter (March 2000).

Invariably, with the unknown, I feel a really worried and not as relived as I thought I would be, But overall, a rubbish manager with a rubbish record who always seemed to think he was too god for us.

I like to think my "stuck with him now" comments last night had some say in the matter

The players we got are well suited to a Coppell return. We got the right players in the right areas. We just need the right manager to get the best out of them and Coppell would do it.

We got good wingers in Ola John and McLeary. We got good forwards in Vydra, Sa and Blackman. We got good Central Midfielders in Norwood, Williams and Fernandez. With Coppell at the helm, he'll get the right formation, the right mentality, the right way to play and we'll be flying in no time. And if it doesn't work, it'll be because of the attitude of the players and because of Clarke's poor recruitment decisions bringing in players who don't have the right hunger. Coppell will sort it out if he has enough time and Tim Dellor doesn't hound him out.
