Extended-Phenotype
wingnut Interesting than when asked this:
Charles Watts Do you get the final say? If you say no, I don’t want him, would he still arrive?

Brian didn't really answer it.

I think it's quite clear the answer is ''no I don't get the final say''

Maybe, Maybe not. Maybe Brian hasn't pushed that bit yet? Maybe, he was lining up Washington and then the owners (scouts) said "what about this guy?" and then maybe Brian looked at him and thought he was ok and could fit in.

15 goals this year ...

http://www.ekstraklasa.org/kluby/cracovia

About half way down the page "STRZELCY" means scorers.

As an aside the two Krakow teams are ultra rivals - about 1/2 mile apart with a big park in the middle. I can imagine that being the battleground on many occasions after a few pints of Zywiec / Tyskie. And yes - they do both play at home on the same day sometimes ...

Extended-Phenotype  @ the idea our owners just sign players without consulting or discussing with the DoF or manager. If Brian didn't want the player pretty sure we wouldn't be signing him.

You can  @ that idea all you want but I think that's the reality. Certainly, the first Brian knew of Pogbregnyak was when he was introduced to him as our new forward by the then owners.

I'm surprised managers actually wear this, but I guess if they don't, there's plenty out of work that would

Really? Not what he said at the time.

"Hello, new player. I don't want you, you're shit bought by a little boy using his fathers money"

Or

"Hello, new player. I've seen you before and been really impressed, in no way are you someone I don't want"

:?:

I sat in the fans forum when he said he was a fan of Pog, it didn't sit well with me and i had the feeling he wasn't telling the full story. I then sat in the legion and that night he was telling the truth.

If he'd have said his true feelings on Pog at the time then the player would have been irreversibly demotivated, the owner who signed him would be more than a bit unhappy about it and the whole club would have been destabilised.

But never mind all that, Hoop Blah and Ian oxf*rd Royal apparently know it all as per.

I think it is safe to say Pog was foisted on Brian. Similar to Drenthe with Adkins.

This (and possibly Sa / Anton / etc) maybe more of a "hey, what about this guy? cost will be ok - will he fit in?"

What about Vydra? Was that Clarke or Thais? Qudos to Clarke if he got them to shell out the £2.5m loan fee.

In fairness have you ever seen Brian smile on demand in a photo like that? If you want a grinning cheshire cat in the photo then Howe is the man.

Looks like a gangsta. Someone needs to make sure to tell him that knives aren't allowed on the pitch.

Schards#2 My prediction of Rakel's Reading career:

Weeks 1-8 - one random start where he's subbed after 45 mins and lots of "he's not up to speed fitness wise so we're working hard on him in training"

Weeks 8 - 15 - A few appearances on the bench coming on for 10 minutes twice

Weeks 16 onwards - not in squad

Close season - gone on a free to Skonto FC

Yep except I don't think he'll start. Just a few appearances from the bench.

Agreed that this is a good plan on how to read between the lines should it come true. You can add one more signal as well: If we see Simon (assuming he's not left) on the bench or stating instead of Deniss, we know what to expect the rest of his tenure at RFC.

On McD not bringing his "own players" in, we in the good 'ol USA already don't see this as a problem necessarily - it's not uncommon for the general manager (similar to the DoF role) to make most of the team personnel decisions with the coach being the one to assemble the staff. But when its the owners doing it, that is an issue. I would hope that at least Nicky got a say and was representing McD's interests and needs.

Vision I'd take what he's saying in front of fans who've paid a tenner a pop to hear him with a pinch of salt tbh. Especially when it contradicts everything he said at the time.

The Pog signing actually went on for a while as other clubs were involved. Mcd at the time claimed he'd had a number of conversations with him before he signed. No doubt he was Anton's man but this notion that he was introduced to him at the training ground one day as his new signing with no prior knowledge is completely at odds with everything that was said at the time.

Brian's take at the time was that Anton mentioned Pog and said to him "how would you feel if I said I could get him for you?"

Whether he'd have wanted him if he knew how much it cost in wages is another matter but he definitely knew all about him.

Agreed, I'd take anything anyone in football says, but especially managers.

At the time he was trying to save face and not rock the boat for the good of the club, and himself and his reputation.

At the time of the Q&A he was trying to save face and rebuild his dented reputation and probably put a slightly different spin on it. Our memory for these kind of things can change over time as well.

It's pretty certain that he wasn't a player that McDermott went out and wanted to sign though. That's the world these managers live in now and they're paid handsomely to put up with their paymasters giving them players they may or may not really want from time to time.

I like Brian, but I think he's demonstrated with a couple of things he's said that he uses creative licence when it comes to telling the truth, depending on the situation. I find it very difficult to take anything he says about transfers and player situations at face value now.

Valid ..
