Robin Friday

by Forbury Lion » 23 Feb 2016 16:21

Where have the Robin Friday threads gone, a forum search only reveals three mentions of the man - Is the search broken?

Anyway, getreading.co.uk has a photo of Robin Friday celebrating *that* goal, I thought I would share it in case nobody else found it, I stumbled accross the pick of the past gallery is on a page hosting a Reading 1990's quiz, not the most intuitive place to look for a photo taken in 1976!

A favourite photo. Love all the smiles. It appeared on the front cover of The Legend of Robin Friday.

Spoiler alert. Apparently taken after Robin's 2nd goal that night - not after THE goal.

Yeah it was after his second; scored close range.

Brilliant photo though which also encapsulated his no shin-pad, ankle rolled sock regime, nicely caricatured here also by Dennis Nelson!

He received GBH nearly every game; yet hardly ever missed a game, ever through injury.

Those were the days!

Pretty emotional seeing that photo. I was there, just shy of my 15th birthday.

I think of myself as an expert on that period, but I would have put John Murray at no.7. But that is indeed Nelson.

Easily my favourite ever season, didn't miss a home game ( too young to go away).

Cheers Forbury. Was there that night and just seeing this picture brings it all flooding back. No shin pads, got hacked all the time..........what a pleasure to witness 'the greatest player you never saw'. God, how we could do with him now.

Put simply, the greatest player ever to don the hoops. One of the great Elm Park nights, if not THE greatest. I still have the Evening Post from the day after.

It struck me looking at the line-up what an attacking, but lightweight midfield, we had out that night/at the time.

Presumably

Turner

Henderson - Hetzke - Youlden - Moreline (as you'd expect)

Murray - Carnaby - Dunphy

Friday - Hiron - Nelson

2 of Minty's hat trick were pens? IIRC.

Great stuff, BB! Friday's goal really had the big dipper on it. It went over Johnson's left shoulder and actually hit the inside of side netting. I can still recall the sheer brute force of the shot.

Only goal I have seen since that is similar is Jimmy Quinn's against Wolves in 96 and Thierry Henry's against ManU in 07.

Dewey eyed.

LOVED the man, a 16 year-old's man-crush about 40 years before such things existed!!

Even went out with his ex-wife on a couple of occasions late 70's. Shat myself at the time thinking of possible repercussions, so ened up being a complete dil! To be fair she was in our group at the pub - Jolly Brewers anyone remember it? (Now a oxf*rd Tesco Metro FFS!!!!). Oh well, nice memories if nothing else.

Happy daze - and I mean daze not days!!

Cheers Ark, ditto! I can't believe it'll be 40 years ago in a months time. It's a bit galling that there's no footage of it when you consider every game from Sunday league upwards is filmed these days.

Was just about directly behind Friday's left hand on the edge of the South Stand about 8 steps from the back-our usual position until the kids started coming and sat on the wall at the back of the Tilehurst end..
Incidentally (no, I didn't remember this and got it from the records) our home record that season when we finished 3rd and got promoted was:
Played 23-W19 D3 L1 and scored 42 against just 9 !!!
Our defence obviously wasn't that good as away from home they conceded 42.
Lincoln, who won the league that season had a goals record of F 111 A 39

They couldn't make it as the number of extras required as the crowd for the Tranmere night was more than the population of England.

OK - maybe a few hundred thousand must've come in from Wales/Scotland/Ireland

Rather remarkably, apart from myself, I only know for certain of one other Nobber that was there for real.
(and it was still a dive for the penalty - as if diving is a new thing or brought in by foreigners - John Murray was exceptional at it)
