Moved here in 1978 and never saw him play for Reading, but I was at the famous V-sign game in Cardiff.

Norfolk Royal Robin was also one of the first in Reading to become a Teddy Boy in the 50s.

Bizarre post award goes to NR. However Robin Friday did play a couple of games for Reading's Youth team in 1968/9 season.

Denver Royal Was bummed the week Cardiff bought him, for only 30k

No wonder that sticks in your memory! :o . Still, I expect the £30k set you up nicely in 1976 :|

Anybody else listen to Adrian Chiles on Radio 5 live do a piece on Robin Friday today? Had Eamon Dunphy in the studio as well as Friday's wife and Paulo Hewitt. Also interviewed Mark Lawrenson about the sh1t bag incident, which apparently never actually occurred.

11.30 - 12.00. A good 25 minutes worth. Usual anecdotes and some mock commentary of his famous goal v Tranmere. Was very interesting to hear Dunphy's memories as someone who actually played alongside him. Said RF was unbelievably skillful but very slow. Not surprising given his lifestyle. ..

Muskrat Also interviewed Mark Lawrenson about the sh1t bag incident, which apparently never actually occurred.
What do we think -
A) Lawro is lying
B) He didn't find it
C) Wrong bag & someone else had a surprise
D) It never happened

You missed E) Ian Royal....
Its in the rules apparently that that option has to be there.

F) It did happen, but someone* removed it before Lawro opened his bag

*Timetravelling Reading fan from the future perhaps? - Friday's turd now sits in the Reading museum on display next to such artefacts as the Elm Park clock and Sir John Madejski's wig.

I seem to remember Dunphy himself was no whippet so that says something!

Can't recall Friday ever appearing particularly slow (most of the players of that era would be slow compared to their counterparts today) but then he never really needed to have pace, such was his level of skill, strength, bravery and determination.

I was given Robin Friday's shirt, which I had framed a couple of years ago. He wore this number 11 shirt for the opening home game of the 75/76 season against Rochdale - the game of the infamous Tommy Youlden 'goal'. Every other game that season he wore the number 9 shirt.
