Clarke interview on Goals on Sunday

by genome » 24 Apr 2016 11:52

Some choice quotes:

"I didn't do enough due diligence on the club before joining"
"In hindsight I would've joined Fulham"

Said managing the club was very hard, criticised the owners, said Brian hasn't pulled up any trees since he took over. Basically, he's blameless.

I didn't see his interview but it does show I guess based on your comments that the manager is working in a very difficult environment. A lot of our problems stem more from poor leadership from the very top. Not from the team managers position. In this kind of environment, I wouldn't want anyone other than Brian managing the team. Brian is a true character. Weaker men like Clarke are ready to jump ship at the first sign that things won't be easy.

Brian kept improving us year after year despite having to sell the best players each transfer window. Brian thrives in adversity. Useless whingers like Clarke just try to walk away. We need someone with loyalty and some backbone right now and Brian is our man. Long live Brian.

He did also mention the AZ saga and how it screwed us up.

said: the Thais came in with enough to buy the club but not with any money left for anything else

He did play down the Fulham thing I think as when asked to explain it he said:

Fulham asked Reading for permission to speak to me.
They said ok
I spoke to Fulham
But I decided to stay with Reading
3 games later they sacked me
If I had known they had that in mind I would have left and gone to Fulham

... Also...

"Look at the top of the table - Burnley we beat, boro we beat, Brighton we drew with. They are the top 3 teams. "

Sacking him was the definately the right decision without any doubt. At least this book can now be closed.

He appears to be throwing his name in for the Celtic job, either he's deluded or the SPL is even worse than I thought

The first one I would say. It's a fine line between supreme confidence and arrogance and I think Clarke has stepped over it.

I think he should go back to a coaching role as he's not up to being a manager/head coach.

Had no choice really

Theyve invested the spare money in qcademy and infrastructure, and tbf thats how you really grow a club

The idea that clarke had no idea what the situation at reading was like, is mental. Of course he did.

Came across as very bitter. Glad hes gone

Good to see Clarke giving a good interview. Honest and came across really well. Certainly correct that BM hasn't pulled up any trees since joining. 1 point gained out of a possible 15 in the last 5 league games. He was being generous about BM. He hasn't even pulled up any weeds.

Who would have thought that the Thai's don't have money? What a revelation.

I'm pretty sure he was on about the Thais which surprised me as I thought the whole point was they were setting up REP and investing.

I'm sure tho SC said:

AZ screwed Reading over
And then the Thai consortium came in with money to rescue them and buy the club, but nothing else

Or words to that effect

Obviously he's going to say they had no money, because that means he didn't get the support he needed and his shambolic performance wasn't his fault.
