Reading FC and Miss Marple

by The Cube » 31 Jul 2016 20:26

I've just watched Endless Night, an episode of Agatha Christie's Marple from 2013. Towards the end, set in the 1950s, we get to see the study of one Mike Rogers. On a shelf are a couple of framed football photos, one of which is obviously intended to be from his past. But the other photo is of players wearing hoops, plus on the shelf there is a blue-and-white scarf, and a blue-and-white hooped pennant. The pennant has a badge that looks like the Reading town crest. Also, the character is portrayed as growing up in Basingstoke, so him being a Reading fan is likely.

References to Reading FC like this are few and far between so I thought I'd mention it. There's nothing about Reading or football in the book, incidentally.

Spoilers below.

Mike Rogers murders 5 people, and was looking to make Miss Marple the sixth before getting distracted. I think we can safely assume that the set dressing for the study was not done by a Reading supporter. The TV episode is pretty poor and not worth watching.

The book's a bit better (doesn't include Miss Marple) and Michael Rogers does get to kill 6 people.

So did Mike Rogers really bump off Robert Maxwell and make it look like a suicide / drowning accident, do you think?

Mike Rogers goes straight into the top 10 list of Famous Reading fans despite being a fictional character.

Not too difficult, we only have a handful at best...

That bloke who was at the FA (Steve Double?)
John Arlott
That bird off the radio (didn't she do travel news on Radio 2, 5 or Radio 1 or something?)
The girl who presents BBC's local news at 6.30pm
Chris Tarrant

Is Uri still a fan? Was Ian Gillan ever a fan? Is Michael Parkinson still a season ticker holder?

So, of that list, only Chris Tarrant and John Arlott would have been "heard of" outside of Reading (and Michael Parkinson if you're feeling generous)

tidus_mi2 Ricky Gervais
Hmmm... David Brent yes, not so sure about Ricky, He hasn't gone public and hasn't been spotted at any games.

There are celebrities who have attended Reading games at the invitation of Reading fans, but I wouldn't count them as fans really unless they've become hooked and revisited.

Yep, Bill Oddie falls into that, a celebrity who has a soft spot for the club given "his song" but isn't a supporter ....yet
