Dear Stattos - Penalties

by genome » 17 Sep 2016 17:33

Is that 4 now so far this season? Can any stattos out tell me the record for the most amount of penalties awarded to Reading in a season?

I'm almost certain someone on here posted a list of penalties awarded season by season but can't seem to find it

Basically what from I remember we usually average around 7 or 8 a season, but in the 'Shane Long Years' of 2009/10 and 2010/11 we were awarded 13 and 14 I think

Is the miss today's? I was surprised to hear that it counts as a missed pen,
even though the rebound is knocked in

Newcastle - McCleary (scored)
Ipswich - McCleary (scored)
Ipswich - Williams (scored)
Barnsley - McCleary (missed - rebound scored)

Maybe it's a half penalty.

We were awarded 13 in 10/11, not sure if that's the most though.

We missed 6/8 the next year

Well on the basis that none of the stats people quote are real (the fabled 'assist' for example) I guess you could argue that whe a Keeper saves a penalty it's not been missed, but in my book it's clearly a miss. I think the keeper would be distraught to be told his save didn't count !
So yes, we missed the pen but scored from the rebound. If Swift had tucked the rebound away would we be crediting him with having scored the penalty ?

Remember that loss against Barnsley where we missed something like 2 in 3 minutes?

wasn't there a third that HRK scored later on in that game? I believe Harte missed one but can't remember who the other one was.

Yep and I think Noel Hunt missed the other one. There was a game away to Charlton years back where we also missed 2 and scored 1.

transfermarkt.co.uk has various penalty stats

http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/champion ... bewerb/GB2

Interestingly the Games With The Most Penalties stat, of which there are 10 games since 08/09 with 3 pens awarded, include 5 Reading matches - Ipswich this season, along with Birmingham away and Barnsley at home in 11/12, Forest away in 10/11, and Charlton away from our first post-relegation season of 08/09

To my mind there is a big difference between a truly missed penalty (where they miss the target) and one where they fail to score due to a save by the keeper. The latter is still on target and may have been a decent shot but either through luck or amazing keeping it's been saved. The former is just dumb and a bad penalty. Same outcome but not everyone's Zaza.

Quick question. Where did we fall on the "winning a penalty counts as an assist" debate?
Does Swift get an assist for that?

Half-assist.

So 3 goals and 2.5 assists in how many apps?

Winning a penalty is an assist if someone else scores it imo. If they miss, or you take it yourself, it isn't.

genome Yep and I think Noel Hunt missed the other one. There was a game away to Charlton years back where we also missed 2 and scored 1.

We were only awarded two though. One had to be re-taken because the goalkeeper (I think it was someone high-profile like Rob Green?).
