From Despair To Where? To be honest, I don't think it's racist, just utterly crass and borderline offensive.

I'd say it was more than borderline...

Rofl @ the people complaining about being a "grass". This is not school

I know almost all of these guys by sight... they don't know me, I just recognise them as I've seen them at certain games. I'd be really surprised if they have anything to do with this racial chants that we are talking about....

From what I have encountered they are alright, they have morals and are decent guys. Proper lads (in the positive/literal sense)

Serious question.

If you accuse a catholic of being in the IRA, is that racism?

Nameless I agree that it's dangerous to pick out individuals without proper proof, on the other hand you not hearing anything isn't relevant if other people did !

The relevant thing is we would have heard if it was them. There was 5 of us in the row behind that group.
Today's news reports mention people being ejected from the ground, nothing happened like that near us.
You can't post pictures of people you don't who were at the game and accuse them of being racist. There is no proof they were involved , not Impressed.

It's about as stupid as accusing a Protestant of being in the IRA. As most reasonably intelligent people know, Daesh are an extreme perversion of the Sunni branch of Islam. The majority of Omanis are not Sunnis.

I wasn't aware that anyone had 'accused' AAH of being in Daesh. They were just having a 'hilariously funny' joke about Daesh. This has the potential of insulting almost everyone except Daesh. I hope that no-one who has lost a family member to Daesh heard it! Even jokingly saying a deeply honourable man, who is fast becoming a hero to Reading FC and it's fans, is in Daesh must be deeply insulting to him.

grow up oldun....The Scum days are long gone

Interesting statement, please elaborate. What exactly does grow up mean in this context?

Let's make one thing clear, a grass is about as popular as a scorpion in a lucky dip barrel and always has been. The problem of grassing is even highlighted in the Bible with Judas paying the ultimate price.
Can you seriously say that your average classroom tell tale tit was an acceptable friend at school?
not sure what age that your username alludes to....but.....why are you getting involved in this juvenile sh1t anyway.

My point still stands....."grass"......grassing-up........is so 1980 Ronnie Barker stuff

Once in a while the PIGS/authorities need to be informed of unacceptable situations.

(If I witnessed your house being burgled by your neighbour whilst you are away, would you rather I not dial 999?
If that makes me a "grass" (lol) then so be it.....)

I think that many of the others here have done a better job of explaining the "context"

Firstly, my user name does not need to allude to anything.
Secondly, a grass is not a Ronnie Barker TV convenient character, it is a character that betrays his own people. Sadly, they still exist. Calling the Police if you see a house being burgled is not grassing. If someone down the pub let's On that he is doing cash in hand, or someone is selling some tobacco smuggled over from France and some worm notifies the authorities, then that is 'Grassing'. In that situation, would you notify thr Police? Yes or no?

I say borderline because although it is an offensive comment, I wouldn't say for sure the primary intention of the chant was to cause offence, more likely an ignorant muppet who thought it was funny.

Did you miss the bit where the chap in orange was straight on here suspiciously claiming 'nothing to see' straight after the news reports?
Think we can be fairly sure he was chanting about Al-Habsi and ISIS. Though perhaps let's put it down to stupid drunkenness and leave it there.

Based on twitter and other reports of the incident it was a different group that got kicked out for chanting, as well as being aggressive to stewards and fellow fans. The group that were kicked out are certainly scum, and part of the 'crew' that's generally escorted to the train station by police after every game. Definitely not alright/ decent guys and I hope they are given a long ban.

Agree with this. It's not fair to be posting photos of a group you think may have had something to do with it if you don't know. Even if you do know, the club is investigating and has identified them already so there's no need for people to be nosey and get involved. Let the club do their thing and I'm sure they'll issue a statement if they take action against them.

I wouldn't consider someone who sings a chant liable to cause offence to one of our own olayers as "one of my own people". All this "grassing" bollocks. This is 2016, not 1960s Hoxton. They did something stupid, they got caught, they're being punished, tough shit. If you don't like the time, don't do the crime.

I just want to get a thorough understanding of how accusing someone of being a terrorist because of their religion is racist. I thought my question would help me. Are you able to answer?

It's not racist but it's something that could knowingly cause considerable offence. My paternal grandfather used to say that sort of shit to my mum and my aunt all the time and they found it deeply offensive.

Fezza Context:

Ali Al-Habsi is a devout Muslim.

Because of his religion, where he is from and the way he looks some "people" feel it is ok to link him to a known terrorist group who are perpetrating horrific war crimes globally - something that the vast vast majority of Muslims feel is utterly abhorrent.

It is as racist as walking up to someone who is Muslim in the street and calling them a terrorist.

I struggle to see how anyone can view this as "OK" or a bit of "Banter".

I asked for context explanation on a quote about 'old uns and scum, and did not et an answer. Also, your scenario is totally hyperthetical nonsense as a Muslim walking down the street would not be recognisable as a Muslim, as most Muslims tend not to show their religion, some people just assume. But calling A Muslin a terrorist is not racist, it is ignorance.
A big problem we have in today's society is that people actually like to be offended. Perhaps this is because they live empty uneventful lives and then use this opportunity to bully the alleged transgressor.

Yawn.. Ignoring Semtex's look at me posts and paultheroyal's indignant as usual shite.....

You need to be careful when posting pics, especially when copied off other peoples twitter feeds, that you've got the full context of exactly what went on. I've no idea, probably like the rest of you, of exactly what went when on with the chant. My first thought therefore wouldn't be to post a random pic copied off someone elses twitter feed to a fans site where any amount of bellends are going to draw a conclusion based on it. Just my 2p worth.

Oh. And I've met one bloke in that picture. Don't know any of the others so no hidden agenda.

The way that it is done on this site, I would say yes, or as you said, perhaps borderline.
