Checkacrowd Trophy

by Sutekh » 01 Jul 2017 08:21

Would appear that the authorities and lower division clubs have deemed the Checkacrowd Trophy a success and will continue last year's format after a vote

However the competition that has been hijacked from the lower division clubs will no doubt continue to be boycotted by many club's supporters (until the day out at Wembley of course).

As a matter of interest does anyone have stats regarding the average attendances for this competition last season v previous seasons?

For this season's tournament Reading have actually been invited up front, along with 15 other Academy sides from the PL and Championship including newcomers Spurs and Man City

In addition League One and League Two clubs will have greater flexibility with regard to team selection, while still maintaining the principle that this is a first team competition for them, which will support the development and progression of young players.

The Group Stage draw will take place next month with the first round of fixtures scheduled to take place in the week commencing Monday 28th August.

The full list of invited Under 21 sides is as follows:

  1. Brighton & Hove Albion
  2. Chelsea
  3. Everton
  4. Fulham
  5. Leicester City
  6. Manchester City
  7. Middlesbrough
  8. Newcastle United
  9. Reading
  10. Southampton
  11. Stoke City
  12. Sunderland
  13. Swansea City
  14. Tottenham Hotspur
  15. West Bromwich Albion
  16. West Ham United

Surprised at that. I can understand the lower league clubs objections and would probably boycott in their situation too, it makes a bit of a mockery of the competition. That being said, from our perspective it's a great opportunity to test some of our younger players, more games to watch, and of course, another crack at Wembley ( )

I enjoyed brizzle rovers last season - think it was their lowest ever attendance, which sums it all up.

Pointless amalgamation. Enough teams ^ there to run their own competition...if U21's is your thing.

Guess the powers-that-be will plod on with it until they get their Chelsea Man City final.

Given the invites are done on league position it looks like we just scraped in 15th, ahead of Fulham.

All our group games will be AWAY in a change. Don't know if this applies to KO stage.

Average crowds down about 60% (need to check that) but total crowds about the same, there were more matches.

Fans decidedly against this revamp. fan power rules, yeah.

If we got to the final next year, how many fans do you think we'd take?

Unlikely Reading enter the competition to blood and assess the youngsters. Not win it.

Watching the U23's play Yeovil was interesting last season.

Hi Lower West, you've completely ignored my question. My question was hypothetical. Please provide a proper answer, thanks

If "not really bothered about the crowds" wasn't an option, can you provide me with your estimate of how many Reading fans would be at Wembley for a final with Reading playing in?

Well for me it would depend on how much they charged. It's not a "must-go" definitely. Maybe 15K ?

And the trip to Wembley wouldn't be for promotion, so there would actually be a chance of a Reading win.

Based on that - and cheaper pricing than for our usual visits - I'd say 23,739

8,000 maybe. But it could be anything from 5,000 to 25,000. It's completely uncharted territory. And we won't get there anyway.

We've been to Wembley quite a lot in the last few years and it wouldn't be the first team.

I think it's a good idea. It just needs the really big boys to get involved and field some of their young stars. The only arguments against are creep leading to B teams in the league - should never happen and there's a clear distinction given upper tier side's first teams don't compete in the competition and there's no promotion - and it takes away the lower league sides chance to win something - which hasn't happened yet.

Mad isn't it. I'd probably go cheap seats if it happened, on the logic that the next time the first team lose at Wembley I can take solace knowing that at least I've seen us lose at Wembley for "only" £20.
