So in the 13 years it took Leeds to rack up 100, we've had 37, of which 9 were signed by Steve Clarke in less than 12 months.

strap Just realised I also missed Terry the Taxi joining us on loan latter part of 83/84 - although he never made a 1st Xi app. ENFA doesn't mention his loan stint, but Rothmans 84/85 does on page 80 and 429, so many thanks to the OP for that snippet.

Which means Jordan Mutch was our 130th loanee.

Also what about Colin Court who made one first team appearance v Swindon on loan from Andover Town on 29th Feb 1982? IIRC he was brought in at short notice following Steve Death walking out after a dispute with the club over his club house and the reserve keeper Ron Fearon being injured.

strap Happy to be corrected, but this is my list as of today:

I am biased but I still think our first ever loanee turned out to be our best. Although respect to our 103rd.

Cheers strap!

Come on Strap, you've only done half the job !

You are supposed to supply a witty and informative one liner about each of them...

Utterly brilliant as ever Strap, you need to get this database available online or somewhere as there must be zillions of utterly pointless facts to be found in the data :D

Didn't Reading take an Andy Gray on loan (no not that one) from Leeds for a month or two in around 1999, think his only appearance was as a sub in a Tonka Toy Trophy game - or whatever it was called then.

Wazzock Interesting how we've never loaned a player whilst in the Premier League.

Apart from Peter Mate and Aleksandar Gogic but then it is correct to say Reading have never fielded a loan player in a game in the top division.

maffff 39. Luke Chadwick (x2)
Good catch.

Interestingly, this is as a result of a Reading fan suggesting this to Pardew at a fans forum. The fan pointed out that if we allowed Luke Chadwick's loan to expire and then started a new loan a week or two later he would be eligible for the play offs as they would fall under his second loan spell, whereas just extending his loan period would see him return to Man Utd before the play offs. It did mean he missed what must have been a non critical league game though.

So... shall we try and name a Loanee XI?

I remember reading a Reading FC book, can't remember which one - Maybe the Robin Friday book, It told the story of how Reading had a player (goalkeeper?) on loan from a club (Arsenal?) and it was an informal type of loan. Anyway they forgot he wasn't their player and tried to sell him

Was he the one that broke his leg away at Bristol City in the (I think) 3-3 game there?

Apologies, I thought Colin Court was a non-contract player rather than a loanee. He made a few apps for the reserves prior to his single league game for us. See Royals Remembered by Alan Sedunary page 46 for details of how he helped RFC set a league record too.

You might be thinking of Sam Jennings, a very good striker (46 goals in 110 league apps) from 1921 to 1924. He was on l oan to us from Middlesbrough for an incredible 3 seasons, and West Ham tried to buy him from us. Eventually he did join WHU when it was realised he was actually a Middlesbrough registered player. See Royals Remembered by Alan Sedunary p103.

Just realised he doesn't appear in my list! No idea why, but I will check and correct. Just noticed for some reason I filtered only from start of 1968 season - in the belief that the current loan system only started then. No idea where I got that constraint from!!

Apologies for the let down! I will say the Paul Lemon was the worst "footballer" I have ever seen on a RFC shirt. Totally disinterested lard arse billy big-bollox,

Andre Bikey was on loan for the entirety of 2006/07, before signing permanently.

Thanks for all the corrections etc. Having removed the earliest start date for loanees at 1968, it transpires we had 3 loanees prior to the start of the "modern" loan system, (if indeed it started from 1968).

So updated list below, now including clubs the players were loaned from, as well as a lists of the numbers of players from each club and total by nominal player position.

The earliest loan, Sam Jennings, wasn't he the one where Reading actually sold him to West Ham after a couple of seasons without realising he technically wasn't a Reading player?

There were a few I thought you'd missed but on checking I found my memory was less perfect than your records (e.g. Sir Les, Keown Snr, Cywka) & that they all turned out to be short term signings. Good work.

Remember those shockers Leeds signed on loan the season they went down from the Prem ('04?)

Didier Domi, Lamine Sakho and Salomon Olembe spring to mind
10539.4 Miles Away 96/97 Steve Mautone

Reasonable keeper from memory, on loan and then permanent. Pretty sure his song was about him being on loan

Maybe it was cos I was young but I thought he was one of the best keepers we ever had. Penalty save on debut?

Mautone was a quality keeper and would have established himself at Reading for several years but for a warm up at Port Vale where he picked up a freak injury that kept him out for ages and from which he never really recovered.

Cost £250k from West Ham in 1997 after his loan spell finished I think. Now coaching at Melbourne Victory I believe, least that's where I last heard of him.
