From Despair To Where? WSC is hardly a fanzine any more and just about the only football magazine about that asks serious questions about the state of the game.

The Coventry Talbot kit was designed to circumvent the ban on shirt advertising in the early 80's, to the point that Jimmy Hill considered changing the club's name to Coventry Talbot. It was much debated at the time and as such, it was ground breaking in the sense that it went some way to forcing the ban being lifted and it clearly had an impact on football far beyond just being a kit for a provincial football club.

Much more than just a footnote in early 80's football history but maybe you just had little interest in such things at the time.

Thought that the shirt sponsorship ban had been lifted by the time Coventry made themselves look like tits. Wasn't it 1979 or so and Liverpool's then stunning £100k deal with Hitachi that led the way in England. Think Hibernian and Bukta or something were the first club in the British leagues in 1978 that went for it though.

Unbelievably the TV companies hated it and both BBC and ITV started out by refusing to show highlights of English league and cup games where the clubs had shirt sponors

Very first club to try it on with the FA here though was Kettering in 1976 when they famously advertised their local tyre dealer for a whole one game before the FA threw a wobbly over it.

Yeah, slightly misread the article, it was the TV ban on shirt advertising it had an impact on lifting. Obviously having Hitachi, JVC or Hafnia on the kit in 4 inch white letters was easy to remove but it's a different problem when the sponsor's logo forms a huge part of the kit design.

And for those that don't remember the subtle "Talbot" kit :

Not in this country, but RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg not only changed their kits to the colours of their corporate owners, but interestingly this year's kits are pretty much the same and both teams had to have clearance from EUFA to play in the Champions League due to issues over ownership and a possible conflict of interests should they meet at any stage. Would also look like a giant Red Bull TV advert if they did!

Can't be arsed to trawl through 12 pages of this thread but I'd just like to out JMPH80 as one of the most negative, grumpy old sods to grace social media. Nothing good to say. Not a supporter. If he posts on here please can someone expose him - he is a fraud.

I left Twitter as I've noticed far more d1cks than normal on there and that includes some of the so called Reading fans who continually post hateful, negative and often unfair comments about Gunter, Stam etc... no matter what the result of the day's game. Constant unrelenting criticism.

Oh and also there's not enough :| in the world for people who post things like:

"When was the last time Leeds were relevant"
"They are such an irrelevant club"

WTAF? It's moronic to use the word "relevant" in that context as every club is relevant in the Championship, providing you support a team within that league. In fact even if you don't they're still all relevant as they're still all taking up a position in the league.

I think maybe it's just in Football circles this type of behaviour is more insufferable

Not a Twitter Idiot, but has anyone encountered a poster called 'Hull man' on Facebook? He posts on the various RFC posts and fan groups and I'm sure he's Dave Royal.

Wow. What I don't get is these people do it from accounts with their own name and a photo of their mong face so they can clearly be identified/chinned when spotted in person. Incredible.

I think there's a gap in the market for a John Smith Twitter account. If I can be bothered I might make an account.

Watch this space folks.

Quite amusing that someone in the Reading fan base went to such an extent to try and catfish other Reading fans...
