CountryRoyal
strap I don't understand the point of Twitter at all. In fact I don't understand the point of FaceBook, Instagram, MySpace (?) and a whole load of other rather bizarre "social media offerings", whose sole intent seems to be to allow people the opportunity of posting drivel that basically says "look at me, my life is SO interesting".
I'd rather chat/argue/opine with actual friends face to face over a pint or two. Does that make me a bad person as I have no "online friends"??
(No offence intended to anyone who does have accounts at said sites, but why?... Just why??)

Not at all but in which case why post on hob nob?

They're just different means of connecting with people online, no different to a forum or message board which was obviously relatively pioneering.

Things have snowballed now and the basic point has been somewhat convoluted with an abundance of features, parallels and other changed which have come about by market demand and commercial dictate.

Social media CAN be a very useful tool, unfortunately when something is available to the masses the lowest common denominator usually takes dominance, hence it all being filled up with bollocks.

Wholeheartedly agree with you though. The people that continually post "look at me" type content are always the ones whose lives are the most empty and unfulfilled.

You're right of course, never really thought of HNA as a "look at me" forum, but then I suppose in a way it is - especially when I post inane stats!

But what if you can't regularly meet up with the actual friends you are linked to on facebook?
What if you have niche interests, and you can feel part of a group online?

Among my interests are medieval Irish history, Reading FC, politics, electoral systems & constitutional law and urban fantasy. The Venn diagram of those interests is rather small, to say the least. So the chances of me having a multi-stranded conversation on those topics in a pub is minute. But I can follow and partake in conversations with many people, most of whom I have never met, on twitter.

What's not to like?

Rather weirdly 5 out of your 6 subjects pique my interest actually! How bizarre! Appreciate that for intelligent conversation on niche topics I guess you have a point - but photos of your cat, or breakfast, or ingrowing toenail .... ?? I mean REALLY?

Twitter done well is almost real time aggregation of content as well as a way of sharing interesting content (including, strap, statistics). Obviously you need to take things with a pinch of salt (fact check/verify what you can when you can) and try not to take it/yourself too seriously. HNA? rules apply.

Including always have an Ian Royal option on your polls.

Something I dislike: One Reading FC fan tweeting their opinion on something, and then another one passive-aggressively tweeting about said opinion without quoting the tweet, to avoid confrontation

Example:

https://twitter.com/BucksRoyal/status/8 ... 4455647232

Then

https://twitter.com/_One8Seven1_/status ... 7984181248

It's worse than direct arguments between fans

Huh, @_One8seven1_ has blocked me. God knows why, I rarely tweet at all, let alone anything offensive/controversial.

I do agree with your point in general, but I think he has a point on this occasion. What a daft comment from that Simeon character.

Then he should say so (but obviously not in a shitty way) to him. It's the passive-aggressiveness that is annoying

I use Twitter very sparingly to view footballers/clubs tweets and updates on apps etc. I hardly ever tweet as my profile is not exactly hard to find given my name and I don't wish my opinions to be overly public.
It's a good forum for certain things I guess but give me a forum (like hna?) anyday.
Facebook I use to keep in contact with school friends, old work colleagues and family. It's hilarious how many people treat it as a window in to their soul though. The amount of "I had such a bad day, don't ask me about it" statuses are ridiculous.
