John Smith People need to calm down. Jakkola is an able deputy for a few games - we don't need a keeper on the bench. Colin never names a sub keeper so nor should we

When you have 7 subs it is criminal not to name a keeper on the bench. Simply ludicrous.

Depends. Some outfield players can make for very decent goalkeepers. Trevor Senior was always more than decent whenever he was called upon, so if you have an outfield player with a decent level of talent then you could get away with it.

I think Kilmarnock used to often not name a keeper when they had Josh Magennis on their books as he was a GK in youth football until he changed to being a striker.

Seem to recall Jimmy Quinn was also a not bad keeper.

So in those examples the clubs had a player on the bench who was the nom8nated keeper....
Obviously in the extremely rare case that an outfield player is also a competant keeper you have more flexibility but the original point was that we should simply not have a keeper on the bench. I don’t think we have any outfield players who would be able to play 90 minutes in goal with any degree of success anyway and to leave yourself so exposed in a crucial position just seems stupid. If you can’t cover 10 outfield positions with 6 subs then you probably aren’t going to do it with 7.

Both him and Senior were significantly better centre forwards than keepers of course.
The subs situation is massively different these days but it would still seem bizarre to think that it made sense to take your most potent striking option and put him in goal thereby weakening two positions rather than simply putting a specialist keeper on the bench....

You don't have to nominate a goalkeeper on the bench do you? Rules don't stipulate that. Anyone can play in goal and is only stipulated once on the pitch by wearing a goalkeepers kit different to that of the outfield players. So no, they had no goalkeeper on the bench but had a player available who they were comfortable could do a job in the relatively rare scenario that the starting keeper got injured.

Correct, the rules don’t oblige you to nominate who your sub keeper is.
You seem to be confusing the scenario under discussion, where a team has no one on the bench who is a competant keeper and the rare exception where their competant keeper is also an outfield player (in a reverse scenario we could have not named a forward as a sub if Federici was on the bench because he could also do a reasonable job as an outfield player, but why would we do so ?).
So to clarify, my point was that to not have a competant keeper on the bench is criminal and ludicrous. If you are lucky to be in the incredible rare situation of having an outfield player who is good enough in goal to play 90 minutes there and not let you down then you are still having a keeper on the bench.
If you just name 7 outfield players and then if you’re keeper gets injured you have to chuck the shirt at your left back, or your standby Centre forward who has never played in goal the you’ve taken a stupid and unnecessary risk.
The suggestion that we should not have a sub keeper on the bench might work if we had Josh McGinnes, Jimmy Quinn or Trevor Senior available but I’ve not seen any evidence that Liam Kelly is handy with the gloves or Josh Barrett played in goal for Twyford Comets under 9s.....

I was pretty defensive of him at first but he's been pretty poor. Taken some heat off J-Lo though.

I think Forestieri-g8 was the nadir

KC Royal
genome It's a blow but Jaakola is decent.

I'm thinking the management need to take a look at the physio department because this many injuries in a short space of time can't be coincidental. Are they training too hard or something?

It reminds me of that injury crisis we had in Adkins last season. I remember he often said how they're "working very hard", and I couldn't help but wonder if maybe they were working too hard...Got the impression from comments made by Brian and/or the players that Coppell and McDermott once things were clicking took the opposite approach and in the 2nd half of the season just kept things ticking along. Definitely remember Brian saying that in the 2nd half of one season in his first spell.

I know it sounds kind of obvious that the bigger the squad the more injuries you seem to pick up but I do feel there's something to be said for a tighter group numbers wise.

May just be my perception but I'd have thought that the smaller the group the more intensive focus is on each individual. I do wonder whether the size of our current 1st team squad (if the majority were fit) means that individuals aren't getting quite the attention they should.

Might also be *interesting* so see if there was some correlation between how much possession of the ball a team has and the amount of impact injuries they receive. Might be a theory that the more of the ball you have the more challenges are made on you by the opposition.

That being said not much you can do when your two centre halves decide to headbutt each other ;-)

Not sure if this has been posted already, but Vito Mannone has confimred that he does not have a major injury, but rather a knock and should be fit for the Wolves match.

Interesting post. Whilst I do think that the injuries to Obita and Harriott are unlucky I find it odd how we've not heard much about the injuries to Watson and Mendes. I've actually wondered if there's more to the Mendes injury, it didn't come out until some time afterwards and there's been no indication whatsoever about when he's likely to be fit.

Current injury list....

  1. Garath McCleary (groin)

Seems to be one of those annoying niggly can't quite fully recover scenarios. Even after an op he's not really been anywhere near full fitness and seems to be struggling. Starting to get a little bit worried it might go the same way as Stephen Quinn

  2. Stephen Quinn (knee)

Personally think he'll retire. It's been almost 2 years since he was last regularly involved in playing and despite the odd moment when it looks like he's nearing fitness it all seems to go horribly wrong again

  3. George Evans (thigh)

Torn thigh muscle apparently. No expectation set yet as to when he'll return.

  4. Jordan Obita (knee)

    Out for season.

  5. Callum Harriott (hamstring)

This is another worry. Did his hamstring way back at the very end of December but has not made a full recovery as yet and has broken down a couple of times in training when looking to be almost there. That said think he's back training and not too far off playing again though I reckon the club will most likely look to loan him out somewhere in January to get match fit.

  6. Joseph Mendes (knee)

Serious injury. Believe not expected back until towards the end of the season.

  7. Tennai Watson (hamstring)

Last I heard was December time for Tennai but then it was initially hoped Harriott would be back by Easter when he did his hamstring. Be good to have Tennai back when expected so he might get a game in the cup but after Reading's luck with injuries I won't be holding my breath.

  8. Sam Smith (knee)

No idea of the seriousness of Sam's injury. Hopefully for him not too long.

Anyone got any other updates or corrections to the above?

John Swift - Hamstring again...

Harriott is fit apparently, but will be a struggle for him to get game time here at the moment

And after 1 more game it's now

  1. Garath McCleary (groin)

  8. Sam Smith (knee)

No idea of the seriousness of Sam's injury. Hopefully for him not too long

  9. John Swift (hamstring)

Hamstring problem by all accounts which is a worry given his recent history with hamstrings. Don't think it's too serious but more won't be known until a proper check up from the medical team

  10. Yann Kermorgant (hip)

Recurrence of hip problem. Jaap said it was not serious which to me means a week at most. Hopefully back on Saturday but if not then certainly Tuesday though probably only on the bench.

With the injury to Sam Smith and the fact Bod has only trained once in the last week it's likely we'll get to see a starting front three of Barrow, Aluko and Beerens for a little while yet

Yann's wasn't a recurrence of a hip injury according to Stam. Specifically said it wasn't related. I think Bod will start vs Wednesday, and if not then, probably Barnsley

Just to clarify, Yann's injury is a hip injury but not related to the operation. He is hoping to be involved on Saturday so fingers crossed he can start.

Tennai Watson starting for U23s today, Gunter strikes me has a better LB, when Watson is fit slot him in at RB and free up Bacuna for his CM role.

I was pleasantly surprised he started today, didn't think he was expected back until December. But he only lasted half an hour so presume is now injured again.

Tweet from Watson suggests it was planned and he didn’t get injured again

So should be back first team contention in January I’d imagine
