Tony Le Mesmer and Newport County in the Northern Section :|

Maybe, the EFL think Newport County are based in Newport Shropshire?

I lay full blame for the cock-up at the feet of a rather podgy Salako!

Sutekh  Just complete and utter farce. They've obviously learnt nothing from the farce of the 1st round draw.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/40895331

Last season's losing finalists Southampton will host Championship club Wolves in the EFL Cup second round after Thursday's confusing live draw.

League One side Blackburn host Premier League rivals Burnley in a Lancashire derby, with the draw regionalised.

Newcastle will host Nottingham Forest, with Bournemouth away to Birmingham, among six ties with Premier League sides facing Championship opposition.

The draw initially left several sides unsure whether they were home or away.

The second-round ties will be played in the week commencing Monday, 21 August.

The seven Premier League teams involved in European competition will enter at round three.

Home or away?

Amid confusion during the live broadcast, four second-round matches were announced with the incorrect team away from home.

The ties involving seeded sides Brentford, Crystal Palace, Watford and Norwich City were initially read out with the seeded team at the opposite venue.

Further compounding matters, the television hosts appeared to forget that West Ham and Newport County were guaranteed away games, owing to being unable to play at their home grounds.

The Hammers - whose London Stadium home is being used for the World Athletics Championships - will visit League Two team Cheltenham, while Newport - whose pitch is being relaid - travel to Leeds.

Confusion also reigned in the first-round draw in June, which was streamed live from Bangkok, as Charlton were drawn against two clubs, while AFC Wimbledon were also wrongly recorded as being at home to Swindon in that round.

And just how the hell are Newport in the Northern section of the draw while Burton are in the Southern section?

Wolves and Birmingham in the Southern section, while Villa and West Brom (who are geographically between the two) are in the Northern section

Thought it might be to avoid troublesome Derby matches, but then saw Blackburn are playing Burnley......

Newport placed in Northern section to avoid the possibility of them being drawn against West Ham, when both clubs had dispensation to play their tie away from home. Of course there is a much simpler way to avoid that problem.

Why did they want to play away? Why can't they just play somewhere neutral. How dumb

Why should both sets of fans be inconvenienced?
