MATCHWATCH : Millwall Reserves (h) sponsored by Sky Sports cup draw comedy

by Sutekh » 21 Aug 2017 17:19

Next up is the battle of two largely reserve teams in the next round of the league cup

We already know there'll be a good few changes for Reading but Millwall are also expected to do likewise

https://www.newsatden.co.uk/64038-millw ... clash.html

Tickets for adults purchased before 5pm tomorrow (22nd August) cost £7 so there's still value to be had as the two clubs battle for the right to progress to the next round and another go at the high farce that masquerades as league cup draws this season.

Teams appear allowed by the FL to take the **** out of this competition as much as they like without fear of punishment so it will be a good chance to get to see the like of Rinomhota, Smith, Loader etc. not just sitting on the bench - shame though that Watson and Richards are both injured but I guess that may mean Jaap trying something different with the full/wing back roles (Bacuna/McCleary etc.) rather than just blithely sticking with Gunter and Blackett.

Referee for the night is Surrey's Charles Breakspear who is yet to oversee a Reading goal - let alone a win - from his only two previous attempts; both of a January, v Middlesbrough in 2015 (D 0-0) and v MK Dons (L 1-0) in 2016

Be great if we got a game like the last encounter with Millwall in the league cup back in 1985 which saw a 4-3 defeat at The (proper) Den and seem to recall it was rather full blooded with none of this trend for poncey tippy tappy grollocks from either (more or less full strength) side.

Stick your random jottings, nostalgic reminiscences, match predictions, line up guesses and then the story as the match unfolds below

Looking at that, seems our squad depth is stronger, given home advantage I think we should come through. I hope Stam keeps playing teams like this for the entirety of the cup, even if we get a big side later on, should we progress tonight.

So who's at left back?

Quinn, Evans, Ilori, Andresson, Bacuna?

I like this, room to blood youngsters like Andresson, Rinomhota and Smith, game time for Bacuna, and Jaakkola - fitness tests for Quinn and McCleary. Some experience in midfield to go with the youth. Ilori given a test to lead at the centre of defence.

Gooding says

...........................Jaakkola
Gunter, Ilori, Evans, Andresson, Rinomhota

Does anyone else get the feeling there's no point in tuning in to the first half of Reading matches?

Check in at half time to see if we're losing, otherwise it'll have been a dull 0-0 so far.

Reading last scored in the first half of a game at Burton Albion, that's now 8 games ago. Therefore this could be the 9th successive game without a first half goal for Reading.

Bacuna 1-0. Knew that comment about games without first half goals would tempt fate - wish Id said it during the Preston game :D

Clement is on for McCleary - so that's him probably injured then....

How is this sounding? Are we attacking with any purpose?

The reason I ask is because Reading are currently the only thing that stand between me and £1200 on a 7 fold bet. I can cash out for £40 odd but I'd rather hold on.

Eh, if your cash out is £40 I'd just stick with it, Reading should be more likely to win it.

Really dull game although there was a last 10 minutes of first half but second half is mainly Millwall with Reading being their usual over thinking selves with plenty of passing about but always running out of ideas in the final third - or trying to pass the ball into the net rather than shooting etc.

Could be snother 30 minutes of this and then penalties....

Barrow on for Quinn

Millwall apparently been the stronger second half.

It's dire listening though.

As soon as some of these other games finish I'm cashing out.
