Yes, as it happens. 3 successful per game last season according to whoscored. which is higher than any of our midfielders managed.

For comparison, Danny Williams was 1.7, Joey 2.1, Swift 1.1

Also played 37 games last season, so clearly isn't fragile.

Hmmm interesting. Maybe a Gunnarsson type signing?

Yeah, that's exactly who popped into my head. Or maybe a Leigertwood. Whoscored is a very blunt tool of course, but looking at it for isolated statistics, he looks like the kind pf player we need, and haven't got.

Exactly the kind of player that will get constant stick from some, for not doing anything with the ball. But yeah, most of our fans don't know anything about football (including me)

We absolutely need a player like those 2 to protect our "defence" especially if Joey is injured on a regular basis.

I'm giving up on Quinn and Joey even staying fit long enough to be a fixture in centre mid

Def a place for Edwards. Have to be honest would be surprised if they let him go to us for 1mill

Not as if they need the money, and he is 31.

windermereROYAL Normal knee jerk here as on social media. FFS if we signed Messi some of you would still moan.
A goal every 4.9 games last season. very probably a replacement for Quinn.

Which Messi?

Would be good to have him in a squad alongside Joey VDB

from a wolves blog: Dave Edwards is at his best when behind the striker, allowing him to arrive in the box and get on the end of crosses – which he can do to great effect.

I did this for twitter

Quick comparison of Edwards v Williams 2016/17 seasons

Minutes played
Williams: 3642
Edwards: 3777

Games per goal
Williams: 10
Edwards: 4 (Edwards averages a goal every 5 games over his career)

Games per assist
Williams: averages one every 50,
Edwards: 14 (Edwards averages an assist every 20 games over his career)

Games per attacking contribution
Williams: 8.1
Edwards: 3.2 (averages a contribution every 4.3 games over his career)

Of our central midfielders only Swift beats that.

Yellow cards, both average one every four games.

No reds for Edwards in last 6 years.

Shots per game
Williams: 1.6
Edwards 1.4
On target
Williams 0.64
Edwards 0.62
Shots per goal
Williams 16.25
Edwards 8.3

Passes per game
Williams 39
Edwards 34.5

Pass success %age (total)
Williams 86% (88.4% short, 69% long)
Edwards 76% (81% short, 34.5% long)

Key passes per game
Williams 0.62
Edwards 0.79

Throughballs
Edwards did one! Williams none.
Only Yann, GMac and Evans made one for us last season.

Aerial attempts p/g
Williams 3.42 Edwards 4.27
Win %
Williams 46.5% Edwards 51%
Aerial wins p/g
Williams 1.59 Edwards 2.17

Successful tackles per game
Williams 1.68 (64% win rate)
Edwards 3.12 (64.7% win rate)

Interceptions p/g
Williams 1.2
Edwards 1.7

Clearances p/g
Williams 1
Edwards 1.6

So basically he's not a defensive midfielder more a centre midfielder, if you see what I mean.

Possible to be a sidwell type player, likes to tackle give it simple then arrive late in the box with a powerful finish or pick up the loose ball on the edge of the box.
And like most of stams signings know the league well.

Correct, he isn't. He's a central midfielder. Better in a 3 than a 2. Gets stuck in, adds defensively but is better a bit higher up the pitch.

Not that fast or great at beating a man when he's in possession, but should be a good mature head. He's actually been maturing as a footballer the last couple of years it seems.

Also, whoever tried to pass off Williams as a defensive midfielder (and Huddersfield announcing Williams as a defensive midfielder) - morons.

Like the look of this. If everyone is fit (and I'm including Clement as an attacking midfielder as well) then there's going to be some disappointed players on the bench or not even in the squad.

Will add a lot of know how and experience to the side. Different type of player to Joey and Quinn but still nice to ha e an experienced head in there

10 goals from midfield pretty exceptional in that Wolves side

Sounds similar to another midfielder that we signed from Wolves in 1989, who went on to become a Royals legend. All Hail the new Mick Gooding! :D

Would be very pleased with this signing if it happens.

Fcuk me, if he's as good as that, then happy days. Pound for pound the best Reading player over his time at Reading the best player I've seen.

Good signing if it happens. Makes me think Stam possibly sees Evans' future as a ball playing CB, which would kind of fit his philosophy.

It's like Stam's trying to bolster our midfield with players who have a bit of everything (and well) in Bacuna and Edwards. Particularly giving more goals. Which is unsurprising given we'll often play one up front and none of our attackers are reliably prolific, so he seems to be trying to add goals across the park. And a bit more steel to the middle to protect the defence at the same time.

If Edwards comes in, it's really hard to see what our best midfield is. It's really difficult, because I don't want to block Evans and particularly Kelly, but I do want us to perform consistently better there.

Edwards, Bacuna, Evans would be pretty combative whilst still offering decent goal options!

2 different styles Depending on who we play
Mannone
Moore. McShane. Llori
Bacuna. Gunter\obita
Evans
Kelly Edwards
Kermorgant

Or.....
Mannone
Gunter. Moore. McShane. Obita
Kelly
Edwards. Swift
Mccleary. Barrow
