The Legend of Robin Friday

by d3d4 » 05 Dec 2017 19:14

Hi all,

as many of you are probably aware there is a new book out about the legend surrounding Robin Friday. Written by Roger Titford this book explores how a player that essentially spent his entire career, brief as it was, in the lower leagues has ended up becoming the stuff of legend.

It is a really well put together volume that would be a perfect xmas gift for any Reading fan and indeed fan of football writing. Have a look at the authors article about his new book below:

I hope you enjoy it,

Thanks

Excellent, will certainly check it out. How does it compare to the other RF book - The Greatest Footballer You Never Saw: The Robin Friday Story ?

Saw this article on the BBC yesterday - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/42149232 - Omar Abdulrahman: Is he the best footballer you've never heard of?

Robin would've been a superstar if he was born 30 years later

But can he score a 100 yarder from the Tilehurst End in front of 85,000,000 while taking a dump in Lawro's kit bag?

It is a different idea to the previous book and explores how his legend grew. The author explains all about it in the recent Tilehurstend Podcast:

You forgot the bit about knocking a policemans helmet off.

And also getting a round of applause from the referee,

Proper footballers from a proper time.

Had the great man still been around, would’ve loved to have seen him sharing the punditry with Lawro

Nice little book, very well produced, not quite what you might expect as he takes on and knocks down a fair bit of that kind of hype - whilst still loving Robin.

I thought he lifted/tilted the policeman's helmet and kissed him! And yes, I was actually lucky enough to be both at that game and the Tranmere game with 'that goal'. Friday's time was an oasis in the desert of being a lower division football club supporter.

I was at every game Friday played, I was in the showers when he violated Lawro’s kit bag, I spent a week with him In Weston Super Mare trying to persuade him not to join Cardiff, from my time as a police officer I still have the lipstick from THAT kiss and was happy to lead the applause for that amazing goal , being lucky enough to have been the referee at the tranmere game.
I do sometimes find people’s memories of the great man to be a bit unreliable !

Shall definitely get a copy of the book, there was a stack of them in waterstones in town....

Some can delude themselves and claim they were there. Some can deride others for stating they were there. And some can just take the jibes and sit smug in the knowledge that they were actually there and that the memories, albeit faded, do actually exist in their brain!

Unlike my memory the autographs from that time, including many from the man himself, aren't fading in the book. I don't recall him ever not making time for us youngsters looking to hijack his time going to and from the players entrance in Norfolk Road.

I was only 10-12 when he played for us so can't remember a lot about the goals, mainly the excitement from the crowd when he got the ball. I used to stand right behind the Tilehurst End goal in those days and I have one specific memory of Robin, a wayward shot in the pre game warm up hit some poor kid in the face, Robin was straight over checking he was ok, and gave him one of the training balls, signed.

I know he had his problems but the guy was class with the fans.

Pretty much this

I was 12 /13/14 years old during his time with us and apart from seeing him leaving the Spread Eagle, whiskey in hand....only to see him minutes later on the pitch, socks down by his ankles, shirt half tucked in half not....classic Robin I guess

Saw him score many goals and the odd sending off etc... maybe even saw THAT goal, just cannot remember any of them...as a schoolkid, it was just a game where the result was all

The book sounds like it’s well worth it’s princely sum
