The Chris Gunter appreciation thread

by leon » 21 Jan 2018 23:46

Let’s hear it for Chris Gunter. Yes let’s, you miserable fcukers.

Mr Reliable. Great engine. Goal line clearances and last minute tackles. And a great looking lad to boot!

So let’s hear it for our very own Welsh wingback wonder, our Cymraeg Cafu.

ive been blocked by him on twitter for giving him (deserved) dogs abuse. But he's been a standout performer recently. But then Paul Brooker would look great in this team. So...

Ah an insult disguised as a compliment, seems like he was right to block you.

Defensively, not fit to lace the boots of Murty, Shorey and several others. Backs off his winger, therefore allowing countless crosses into our box that should never arrive, making him a major contributor to our poor defensive record since the day he arrived. No longer having McCleary in front of him has made matters even worse.

Usually plays better out of position. Bacuna has been our best right back this season.

+1 for the appreciation of CG. The abuse he gets from certain fans is quite astounding.

Totes agreed that Chris deserves recognition, no surprise that Reading fans can't appreciate what he does

tbh, I've never really heard him get any abuse. Only from Ian Royal on here plus one or two others. Maybe thats what comes with sitting in the ED

Amazed when Stam referred to it last week. He has a seriously thin skin.

He's a decent player. Gives his all and actually looks like he really gives a tos$ unlike half the others at the moment.

Top bloke, top pro and looked after my boy when he was a mascot a while back. Can't say a bad word about him.

Yes, he is easily recognisable-the fair-hired bloke who points a lot and holds his hand up appealing for offside when a player is clearly onside and scoring a goal.

His record speaks for itself. Close to 400 league appearances and 85 int caps and he is only 28. He has played at the lowest, championship level. Has been first choice with every manger we have had in his time here. If we had 11 players out there like Gunter, we would be doing a far lot better. He has been made a scapegoat for our shocking season so far over looking that 11 players our out there losing.

If only he could cut out crosses.
......Not too much to ask from a fullback is it?

Can't really find much fault in the rest of his game. His own crossing could be a bit more decisive i suppose

Some of you need to recognise the difference between "abuse" and assessment of ability and performance.

I don't know Chris Gunter the man and have no reason to believe he is anything other than a decent guy.

What I also know is that he's a very average right back both defensively and offensively and his 85? Welsh Caps says more about a Welsh side which, minus Gareth Bale, wouldn't pull up any trees in the Championship; a team that regularly contains two of our current squad plus one former, bone idle, member of it :|

As Reading fans, a club that has traditionally played with attacking full backs, most of us have seen some very decent incumbents down the years so , yes, we may have been somewhat spoilt in this respect but, sorry, Chris, you don't even come close to making our best ever short list.

Frankly, I wouldn't care if he never crossed the half way line if he just did his job at the back and protected our right flank by actually engaging with the enemy rather than impersonating a foot soldier in full retreat.

Gunter does backtrack too much. Having said that I would rather he did this than commit to a tackle and get skinned.
He is a decent right back at this level and more comfortable on the ball than the vast majority of right backs in our history.
He also makes loads of forward runs but our passing is so laboured that his movement is totally wasted.

He's been a solid player for us and is decent at this level. Deserves a lot of respect.
