Victor MeldrewFrom Despair To Where?Victor Meldrew We have bought players who have gone through the youth processes at the bigger clubs, e.g.Ilori, Swift , Blackett, Moore,Evans and you could include Barrow at a push (is Swansea a bigger club?)
I wouldn't include Barrow at all because he was 21 when he signed for Swansea after 4 years in Norway.
Liverpool signed Ilori from Sporting at 20 for about £7m. Far from being the result of a good youth setup, He was the result of someone being stupid enough to give Brendan Rodgers a blank chequebook.
We've got Obita and Kelly getting regular starts when fit along with Smith, Richards and Watson knocking on the door and recently signing long term deals. I don't know what sort of return people expect from the academy but that's not bad for the past 5 years. I dont think we should expect it to produce more 1 player a year for the first team.
That's very good spin suggesting that the 3 knocking on the door means one making it to first team level every year over a 5 year period.when Smith and Watson still have much to prove.
Also you have been pedantic over Ilori and Barrow especially with Ilori as Sporting Lisbon is a rather big club.
We clearly have different expectations of the Academy and I would be more than happy with one new regular first-teamer every season but 2 in 5 years IMHO is not good enough and hopefully the new guy will do better.

Vision And Jake Cooper made over 30 appearances in 15/16 which I must admit surprised me.

Snowflake Royal I'd like to see someone.... strap? ... do a breakdown of first xi appearances per season from youth team graduates going back to coppell and maybe Pards.
I think the contrast between now and Coppells early years would be stark. I reckon I'd struggle to think of 10 graduates to make 5+ appearances during the Coppell / Pards error, but could probably push towards 20 from Rodgers onwards.

Off the top of my head Johnny Haynes has made a name for himself up in Scotland whilst Adam Lockwood has had a decent football League career. Also Johnny Mullins has been a regular lower league journeyman type with Andre Boucard a non league equivalent.
Whatever happened to the likes of Alex Haddow, Darren Campbell, Peter Castle, Ahmed Rifat etc.?
But of course none of them even remotely resembled first team regulars in the way the players mentioned previously have in the last 5 years . The Academy has come a long way despite what some may perceive to be otherwise and it does make financial sense for us.
Also worth noting that the era of Karacan/Pearce/Henry/Gylffi/HRK/Church all were reaching 1st team age at the arse end of Coppell's reign.

I was specifically thinking for Reading. I'm not suggesting my perceived lack of academy graduates under Coppell is a flaw of his, there was a bit of a sea change at the club around Pards time iirc, Burns having scrapped the reserve side (and possibly youth set up) with Pards bringing it back. And obviously there's going to be an x year lag before you see the benefits from an academy.
So the fruits we've benefitted from since Coppell are very much based on the ground work laid by Pards and Cops (and obviously MccyD, Rodgers, Dolan and co in the Academy).

Victor Meldrew It "feels" as though we are a club of mercenaries rather than a developing project.
I remember some years ago as we were progressing through the divisions I think it was Mr Angry who said that he didn't want our club to end up as one buying loads of foreign players with no affinity to the club.
So good luck to the new Academy man and, probably like him, I look forward to the day when 3 or 4 home-growns make up the nucleus of the side-hopefully that won't be in Div 1 or 2 when we will have had to just play them however good they are.

City had a pearl handed to them. McAtee, not 15 until later this year, has been compared to a young Jack Wheelchair, a kid who can dribble, shoot, pass and run with natural head-up balance. And he is being made to work for it
