Goal Drought At Home In The League

by Royal_jimmy » 17 Feb 2018 07:08

Our last home league goal was nearly the best part of 4 matches ago. Mo Barrow's goal in the 76th minute vs Burton Albion was the last one.

So more or less 5 hours of football without a goal.

How depressing, must be approaching a club record surely? There's a good chance we won't score vs Derby or Sheffield United either which would mean 8 hours without a goal!

Not surprising when our first shot on target is the 90th minute every game.

Doubt Reading are too close to a club record on this, bound to be some obscure run way back when that people have forgotten.

Perhaps Strap can step in here and advise what is the longest run of home LEAGUE games Reading have gone without scoring.

I remember us having a long goalless run at home in 87/88.

My recollection of the second half of Coppell's final season is that we could barely buy a goal at home.

Yeah, we were seemingly on for a bounce-back promotion but we really struggled at home for the second half of the season, didn't we go into the last game needing to win against Birmingham to make the top two and then we lost to Burnely in the Play-Off Semi's.

I suspected it might have happened under Clarke and I was right. We've actually had a run of 6 in recent history. We failed to score in 12 of our home games in 14-15, including the last four, which were a 0-0 draw with Blackburn, and defeats to Bournemouth, Birmingham and Brentford (0-1, 0-1, 0-2). We then opened 15-16 with consecutive 0-0 draws with Leeds and MK Dons, before breaking our six game duck in style, with a 5-1 thumping of Ipswich.

Before I've found a 4 game goal-less run under Adkins as we got relegated from the Premier League, 0-2 defeats to Southampton and City, and 0-0 draws with QPR and Liverpool.

And prior to that the hunch re Coppell's last season was about correct, albeit the longest run was 3 games. Our 2-2 draw with Charlton was the only time in a run of seven homes games where we hit the back of the net, and by quirk of our fixtures that season, the only home goals scored between 27th January and 3rd May.
