What is the point of van den Red Card?

by strap » 28 Feb 2018 00:24

Well after tonight's debacle JVDB has now amassed 63 fouls committed this season - eclipsing Liam Moore and Leandro Bacuna on 29 each. I will do a fouls per minute on the pitch review when I get the time, but seriously, what does this Dutch* former shelf stacker* bring to the team?

(* merely a fact Pete, nothing else implied).

Dear old JVBD had amassed 63 fouls this season committed in c.2144 mins on the pitch. So we can expect a foul by him every 34 minutes or so. I will endeavour to work out the stats for the whole team to see if this is in any way out of the ordinary.

I had hoped that Stam had finally clicked on Saturday but nope he was back in the side tonight. Like many Reading fans I knew we had no chance with him and Clement in the side and Barrow missing. He is a massive liability.

He was the best of our back 3 last night......

But yeah, 'greed.

I was saying to someone last night I'd give anything for our team to be as physical as Sheff Utd, but we literally only have Joey that can mix it up. Everyone else is so powderpuff

He was awful. The whole back 3 were awful but he was the most awful of them

So slow in everything he does and giving away fouls does not equal ‘mixing it up’.

He should be nowhere near a Championship side

Van den Red Card is a crap name btw

and Loliam Moore hasn’t done his Premiership aspirations any favours either.

Hasn't Joey only had one red card since he's been with us?

....where he took one for the team in the dying minutes to prevent a goal scoring opportunity and save a point.

Unfortunately, Van den Twoyardsoffthepace is a bit of a mouthful.

Agreed. I am embarrassed to have him at our club. He wouldn't get into any of the other Championship side so why the hell is he in ours?

He is Dutch. Only reason.

I'm mystified as to how he got a contract extension. Always saw him as a stop gap and whilst he was OK last season, there was nothing to warrant an extension beyond the initial two years.

So how does that fit with ditching Gravenberch and selling Beerens?

I can see why we signed him; we are short of grit in midfield but he got progressively less effective last season. Can't see why we would offer him another year.

Gravenberch is clearly not good enough (JVDB has at least had the odd good game) and Beerens was financial so we could bring in Martin.

I like JVDB, but not in that back like. I like him playing in front to the back 4. That's where hes best. I just cant get my head around some of Stams decisions about putting him in central defence.

Well the choice for that formation was either JVDB or Blackett,
Tough call really.

I think he is worse in midfield. He is so slow in his passing and thinking. Constantly runs into space, runs out of ideas, and turns back round again to pass it back. Completely constipates our entire movement in midfield. Added to the constant stream of silly fouls in dangerous areas.

He brings mistakes, backward passing and the ability to slow the game down to the party. Least that's what it seems to be this season.

But then you could start similar threads about Aluko, Clement, Blackett etc.

He's Dutch.

So.... that's his point.

If you're a big Dutch manager and you have a big Dutch mate you want him in the team, no matter what he's like.
