Hound I’m hoping the majority of those injuries have cleared up

Swift has to be 100% by now surely? Hopefully Elphick and McShane back, Richards, Kelly, Yann - even Mendes as well

He isn’t short of options

Are you liking the clement appt ? ..

JR I think this is an absolutely superb appointment.

Clement has got massive potential and it just feels right to have him at Reading - a perfect match.

You certainly can’t knock someone with experience at PSG, Bayern, Chelsea and Real!!

I couldn't give less of a fukk where someone coached.

Good coaches =/= good managers

Given the team we have a good coach is probably what we need most

The fact he’s also had managerial experience will help

I am perhaps most concerned over how barmy this makes our army.

Are we Paul Clement's barmy army or not? Indeed how barmy do we need to be to be a barmy army? And what indeed constitutes being barmy? Should I wear an amusing hat? Do I have to make a slightly sarcastic, but ultimately hilarious comment, in order to be considered barmy? What makes our army, more barmy than someone else's?

The long and short of it, can we say the barmy army chant or not? I may burst if I do not know.

I’ve never liked the Barmy Army chant.

It’s shit

Didn't we do that with Stam?

Did we? If you are saying Stam had never been sacked that doesn’t mean we refused to consider anyone who had been which was surely the point myself and others were making.

Only on Hobnob :|

My point, as I'm sure you are fully aware, is that we selected a manager who had never been sacked (may not have been a criteria, but it's a fact). And it turns out that selecting a manager who has never been sacked doesn't necessarily get you a better manager than selecting one who has been sacked, and, if you did use it as a criteria, would mean you have very very little choice.

All managers are either (a) brand new, (b) so unreliable they walk at the first hint of trouble/better offer or (c) have been sacked before.

Even Arsene Wenger has been sacked twice.

Except the point I was making was about excluding all those previously sacked from the "selection process" for which neither you nor anyone else has provided any evidence to suggest was the case when Stam was appointed.

Woodcote Royal So we should have excluded anyone who has been previously sacked in our selection process

On that basis, merely appointing a manager who had never been sacked before doesn't mean "we did that with Stam" HTH

Snowflake Royal I really don't get the Swansea criticism. This is a side that have been in trouble for a couple of years now, and are only in the PL to be in danger of relegation because he saved them first time round.

It's not like Swansea are as established a PL side as we are Championship, or as big size wise for the division they're in.

Criticism for failing to completely turn around that small leaking ship is hardly realistic or fair. Just because they did well for a while, well that's side has broken up and they can't sustain it longer term it seems.

Hopefully we're in a slightly better situation as we are big enough to compete in this division long term.

You could also see a transformation in Swansea once he'd gone ?

Swansea seem to be in a cycle at the moment. Manager comes in, does badly -> gets sacked. New manager comes in, keeps them up, starts the next season badly -> gets sacked and repeat. Carlos looks to be keeping them up this season but odds on him being sacked by Christmas? Probably will be one of the first to go.

Laudrup
Monk
Guidolin
Bradley
Clement
Carlos - next?

With that in mind, it’s probably a deeper issue at club level, rather than manager level.

Second reply nailed it
Good if you let them play; easy to stop.
He deserves the sack for not evolving them. Everybody knows how they played last season, everybody was wise as to how to stop it.

Particularly enjoy this comment in reply to a Reading fan asking about Clement....
With the money he spent we should have pissed the league, instead we spent 6 months passing around the back and relied on the odd Ince wondergoal to get us through. One to avoid without doubt

He obviously attended the Stam school of fitness training too...
The other worry would be his approach to fitness - Mel brought the players a ton of new gym equipment, Clement had it smuggled out undercover! Bradley "about the same skill level as me but a shear beast" Johnson was the fittest player at the club when he arrived, three months later, not fit.

Are we sure they didn't have Jaap Stam managing them?
The overview of Clement is essentially that possession is the goal.
It felt like if there was a 90% chance of a through ball on goal or 100% to pass back to the centre back, you take the centre back pass.

Any chance we could not spend our time dredging up past criticism of our new manager and get behind him to see how he does over the next 18 - 25 games before complaining?

Are you new around here?

I'm just disappointed and was hoping for more than as true a like-for-like as you'll find. Hopefully Gibbs and the new coaching team will buffer the tedium a bit

Winston, thx for the link, some good thoughts in there (and no egos/trolls☺).
They seem bullish on McClaren, which I suppose they would be, given he had a decent spell there.
It was interesting in here who folks were lobbying for. Going in, since he was available I'd thought there might be more props for McClaren. I'm not his biggest fan myself, but for those worried about boring footy, which seems to figure prominently in here, then I had thought he might get more support. Anyway, we'll see what Mr C does and hopefully we made the right choice.
