Apart from the facts that we won more points in 05/06 than this Wolves side, lost less games, scored more goals, conceded less goals and therefore had a much better goal difference Goodman seems about right.

If we only got 106 because the division was shit that year, how did basically the same team finish 8th in the Premier League the next season?

The Championship is certainly shit this year, there are about six teams who deserve to go down.

I bet Wolves make bigger changes to their first XI and still finish lower than 8th next season.

tbf...I think Goodman acknowledges our ‘specialdom’ achievement, along with others who have bettered 100 pointsin his narration.

Eitherway, it’s history, as will Wolves be, in their brief visit to the top flight once sgain.

windermereROYAL I mean what a total bellend,

Don Goodman weighs in to the 'best team ever in the Championship' debate, but clearly getting the most points (Reading's 106) is not enough..
"Wolves have been probably the best team I've ever seen in the championship, I'll go as far as to say that.
"They just had a little blip which has just cost them a couple of points that ultimately as far as that record goes is going to cost them.
"But I think any team that gets 100 points in this league is a special team and you look at those teams, they were all special teams that got to 100 points.
"Wolves have been magnificent in every conceivable way this season"

Well, it's an opinion. Many opinions in football are biased, it's inevitable.

What makes a team great? Often it's the opposition that makes a team great. If you have weaker opposition you'd look amazing. So, you'd have to consider a lot of things in order to determine what a great team is. Seeing as how no one is going to bother with that, then you go with emotional stuff.

We had 3 or 4 good strikers that season too. Can you name a Wolves forward (Afobe is a loanee so doesn't count in my opinion)?

A colleague of mine at work is a STH and says Neves is brilliant - best player he's ever seen at this level. Other than that they've been very solid at the back (Boly looks a real beast) and have had almost no injuries all season either. Having a consistent team (as we did in 05/06) is a massive help to achieving great results.

Kitson, Lita, Doyle and Long. God, I wish we had even one of that standard now. Unbelievable to think we had those four on our books at the same time. Mind you, they all suffered from injuries, so Coppell rarely had to make a choice as to who would play.

It's easy to forget that Long started that season as raw 18 year old, and didn't make his debut until the last home game of 2005.

Makes it all the more sweeter. There is no way Reading FC 2005/06 would have lost like that today.

And then earned a point with a late equaliser at Derby on New Years Eve

Ah. Never mind, Don, you can always try again in 2019-20.

With this though would you agree that coppell was the best manager to manage in the championship. Majorly overachieved with limited funds and resources??

It depends how far back you go. If you are limiting it to an era when the 2nd tier was known as "the championship" then almost certainly.

Going back further though, you have Brian Clough turning a mediocre Forest team into one that would get promoted and win the league title the year after, and the European Cup the year after that, without having a big transfer budget.

Some morons were. Anyone with a modicum of sense could see they were a fairly average team with a few star players who would occasionally not turn up and aren't even in the top 5 Championship teams in the last decade.

In fairness, they were racking up the points and were on course to beat it at one stage. Maintaining that pace over the full 46 games is difficult though.

Also, being worried that they might have broken the record isn't the same as believing they would, or even that they were likely too.
