Berks and Bucks Senior Cup 2018/19

by The Cube » 17 Aug 2018 18:37

Reading have entered the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup this season, which also means avoiding a fine from the county FA. Probably will be a reserve / youth team taking part. We have a bye to round 2, so the first game probably won't be until November or so.

Reading were the first winners in 1879, and also won in 1892 and 1995. Pardew took the club out of the competition (and also out of all friendlies against local non-league clubs) after a couple of pre-season clogfests in 2001.

By my reckoning this is the third oldest football competition in the country, and probably one of the oldest 5 in the world. Just something else to mention next time the "no history" thing comes up .

Fantastic news and a great chance to visit some local non-league sides!

I think everyone can agree that in any real sense of the term Wycombe are a non-league club. Anyway, they haven't entered.

And talking of Mickey Mouse outfits something has occurred to me since the original post. This might just be another in the catalogue of administrative failures at Reading over the last year. Member clubs are automatically entered into the county cup, so if you don't want to take part you have to go through the process to withdraw. Such action could require a level of capability greater than we have seen in recent times.

When Adkins was manager we had apparently entered but it was news to him. The B&B automatically put us in the draw.

Doesn't explain why Wycombe not even included.

Cube, don't get your hopes up of a fourth star to go the shirts!

First time I saw Gilksey play was in a friendly at Bracknell in about 1984. Think Reading won 2-0.

We played Bracknell in the Berks & Bucks Cup around 1988ish. Bracknell were rock bottom of the Isthmian League Div 3 at the time, as I recall, and I turned up to find a lad from my class at school playing for them up front.

Also overheard Mark (or Gary?) Holzman asking the Reading players not to win as he had some mates at Bracknell. Reading won 3-0 anyway.

There were probably fewer than 100 fans that night. With Bracknell doing rather better now, there should be a few more - unless it's raining. Larges Lane is not a good ground to go to if it's raining.

The Cube Reading have entered the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup this season, which also means avoiding a fine from the county FA.

Great post & indeed thread - some gr8 stats there.

For me personally, and indulge me if you will, any mention of the "Berks and Bucks Senior Cup" instantly has me back to the South Bank thumbing through "The Royal" at half time, before checking if David Bass has made any appearances yet.

To say "I didn't realise it [The Berks & Bucks Senior Cup] was still going" would be somewhat of an understatement.

Bracknell didn't jump out at me from that list as a place I would like to go, but having said that it could be a different sort of an away day. Anyone thinking of going or been before and can given an insight on the ground ??
