Something changed when McDermott was sacked in 2013, Reading became a different club to me then. It's like the values and principles we had that made us so successful under Madejski had gone.

this. and compounded when hired and sacked again a couple of years later. appalling from the club imo.

Actually, come to think of it, things have been unravelling ever since that 5-7 defeat to Arsenal...

literally one of the greatest games of football ever.
youd pay good money for that kind of emotional rollercoaster in any other entertainment medium.
modern fans have got it all wrong about losing and being a bit shit. the season that got me well and truly hooked by RFC was when we went down in our last year at elm park. its not about winning/spending silly money/being able to brag to your m8s about how amazing your team is.

Maguire I rarely go these days. It's not the money. It's not even necessarily having a baby (although that is a factor). It's more the total lack of enjoyment I experienced for the last two seasons I had a Season Ticket.

Add in the detachment between the club and the town (I honestly hand on heart don't know who owns RFC beyond "the Chinese") and there's not much to tempt me back.

I also think - and some people won't agree with this - that you kind of grow out of football eventually. I see teenagers at away days on their big day out singing really shit songs and I think "good luck to them but nah, I'm done with all that". Few beers with my mates, quick blast of Come On You Royals and that'll do.
+1 I renewed my season ticket but I've missed one game already out out of choice, have another one I intend to miss and didn't bother with the Watford cup game..... when people ask me who have Reading got next/when's your next game I have to look it up on the internet.

If things continue, I doubt I can justify renewing my season ticket again.

If you're the winning team or a neutral yeah. As a Reading fan it was awful, I hated it

Dont think there a culture loss just at Reading, pretty sure its across the whole country. People just cant be arsed to go to the game when there is already so much footy on TV. We also have a generation of hatred towards football in those oxf*rd rugby fans who complain about the money and prima donnas.
Parents dont really want to take their kids with them as they want to have a few beers and the kids themselves aren't really interested in sitting in a freezing stadium watching a boring match.

It’s a good point and a worrying trend. Noticed Watford’s home game a couple of weeks ago and thousands of empty seats.

What was that thing published recently? That 12 premier league clubs would still be profitable without any gate receipts at all. When you get to the point where fans are literally no longer required for the game it’s a really sad time. In reality the fans make the game and always will, no one is going to want to watch a match on TV with zero fans or crowd noise so at some point more will have to be done to re-encourage it at all levels.

Sometimes I watch the highlights and switch off at 4-0. The rest never happened.

I was playing poker with friends when one of them told me we were winning 4-0. I genuinely thought he was taking the piss. When we finished and I looked up the final score me eyes nearly fell out my head.

I heard someone joke recently that the tv studios will eventually add crowds in using CGI and intelligent sound production. . . . . Well i assumed they were joking . . .

Agree with most of the posts on here.
Came to Elm Park with my Dad in 80s, who only went as his workmates were there as well, loved everything about it
Early 90s went with school mates on train to Reading West, same as above
Could only do midweek games for 7-8 years when working, still loved it
Then 3-4 seasons of absolute joy in the mid 2000s as season ticket holder.
Still go 12-15 times a season but the last 2-3 seasons I think I've enjoyed 3-4 games
Already lost my 11 year old to the team up the A34, after taking to Reading for 2 seasons; 9 year old is still a Reading fan and we've been to all the home games thus far, enjoyable it hasn't been.
Can't complain about ticket prices, which is the only high point from this season, but everything else about matchday experience is a tiresome chore

I hate it, but father in law a season ticket holder there (wasn't enough of a reason to not marry my wife).
I narrowly prefer it to him supporting Chelsea or ManUtd though as most of his schoolmates do.

Fair enough and you're right too re. the Prem sides. To be honest if League 1 does happen we will see who the real supporters really are.

Last thing I want is for team to go down, is a matter of pride we're in the league above.
If they were to go down though, I could just about handle it and could see some positives in being in L1.
Those thinking we'd definitely win more and play better football are a lot more confident about the current shower on the pitch and in the boardroom.
