MATCHWATCH : Swansea City (a) sponsored by Andy Rogers

by Sutekh » 24 Oct 2018 09:55

When : Saturday 27th October 2018
Where : Liberty Stadium, Morfa, Swansea, SA1 2FA
Capacity : 21,088
Away Stand : North Stand
What might I see in the area : Sheep

This is one of those games, and there are probably a few of those this season, that most expect Reading to lose. Swansea are all freshly down from the PL and looking for a way back up quickly. They have a very useful squad with the likes of one time Reading target Jay Fulton, Kyle Naughton, Wilfried Bony, Leroy Fer etc. and are more than capable of dispatching the misfiring Royals.

However Swansea are misfiring themselves, though only 4 points off the play offs they have only 3 wins in 12 league games. However they won 3-1 v Blackburn on Tuesday and, apparently, turned on the style in the second half to come from behind. Graham Potter though likes to alter his formation to counter the opposition so quite what he’ll make of Reading’s unsettled squad and form remains to be seen.

This match will also see the return of Paul Clement to his employers of a year ago so he may get a rough ride but then at least he’ll have some knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of some of the Swansea squad. And, of course, Reading will have one time Swan Modou Barrow sitting the game out after a “breach of discipline”.

As usual it seems, Reading’s opponents are fairly free of injury with only Luciano Narsingh out. In contrast Reading’s injuries continue to give a headache with Eza, Obita, Richards, Clement and Edwards all out plus there will, no doubt, be the standard weekly mystery injury looking to claim it’s next victim.

Referee

Keith Stroud will have the pleasure of joining the Royals on the pitch to regale us all with his refereeing expertise

25 Feb 2006 > Reading 2-1 Preston North End
23 Aug 2005 > Reading 3-1 Swansea City (League Cup)

Historically

This will be the 33rd league visit to Swansea who have been consistent opponents stretching all the way back to 1920. In that time there have been 9 wins for Reading but 16 wins for the Swans. There have been only 2 goalless draws in that run but Reading have had a tendency to “come a cropper real good” on several visits, esp. in the 1960s when they conceded 5 goals on three consecutive visits. That said, though, the biggest win was Reading’s 6-1 hammering of Swansea back in 1989 of all seasons.

However Reading are still looking for their first league win at the Liberty Stadium being on a run of LDLD at the moment.

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and travel
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Use an iFollow subscription
  5. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Nice to see we have one of the big game referees Keith Stroud for this one. He is a man of authority and honour.

yeah that would be my side pretty much. If Meyler is crap in training as well, then maybe its time to give Rinomhota a go.

On Meyler - its a pretty sorry state if an experienced international is not performing at a level to allow PC to pick him, when the team is crying out for a solid defensive midfielder. Pretty embarrassing tbh

I am only suggesting Meyler as I believe Kelly, despite starting brightly in the last game, is the weak link in the team. No Ezatolahi so Meyler needs to step up.

I'm clutching at straws..

I wouldn't be upset to see your formation but I would prefer us to continue with the formation we will use when Ezatolahi returns. Keep the players consistent in what is expected from the postionally and let's the players filling in know what they need to do when they are coming on from the bench.

yeah. would have Baldock and Meite switching over throughout tbh

Was impressed with Meite last night - those goals seem to have done him a fair bit of good. Was our biggest threat by a mile. Could easily have had a hatrick

Mentioned that in my BFTG. Once he gets more experience he will start to take those chances but he takes an extra touch too often and his desicion making can be poor. His header was good but right at Camp. Same with his shot from the left. Strong but right at Camp.

I am very encouraged by him.

What's going on here? There must be a reason. Does he maybe start Saturday as his final chance or does Rinhomota rightfully come in?

I think he will get another chance, a chance he will probably blow.

He can then stick to dishing out FIFA points to 16 year old kids on Twitter.

Going for a change of formation, might aswell change things up. What can go more wrong?

3-1-3-2-1 formation, with a strong CDM and CAM.

Yes that’s probably the best shout for our starting line up but Meyer.....dear God he needs to improve.

At the moment happy to give Meyler a bit of slack as he had a pretty grotty year personally last season. On top of that he's had an injury that's taken him out for about 6 weeks as well.

However, that said, there has to be a real issue with him if, with the team in it's current state, he's not doing enough in training to persuade Clement he should be starting games. And he is a Clement signing as well.

Though it's just one more mystery on the playing side to try and get to the bottom of.
