New CEO/Midfield 2for1 thread (Can we sign a Player-CEO fill both roles?)

by Orion » 20 Nov 2018 18:55

Quite a few Gourlay threads so I thought I would start one focussing on our new CEO.

The following is a Google translate from a Dutch media Twitter.

Brian Tevereden# Satisfied is named as the new CEO of
@ReadingFC
but is with
@ksvroeselare
just working out a roadmap. (link: http://www.elfvoetbal.nl/Buitenland/274 ... n-verschil) elfvoetbal.nl/Buitenland/274...

That would be the least surprising appointment possible.

Also would ask whether he is suitably experienced for a club at Reading’s level. After all wasn’t he “just” a coach a couple of years ago?

Yep, I don't think he'd be the correct appointment at all. Don't most CEOs have some sort of business/finance and commercial experience?

This is what I'm worried about, our owners' have two clubs and their poor appointments have led to both clubs being near the foot of their respective league's.

We have this Nani guy as DOF FFS.

Tev comes back, fires Nani and Tev focuses on deals/business.

And who as CEO then?

My impression of Tev is that he just filled the squad with a load, probably too many, players of similar ability. Not very intelligent squad building.

Fair enough.

Still think Howe is the obvious choice for this. He knows how to make a success if it and who needs to be in which positions around d the club.

Isn't Howe focused on developments? If Royal Elm Park isn't happening then it would make sense that he regains control of the club.

Is it happening btw?

You can hire someone to look after the development.

In 2017 Tevreden oversaw a huge increase in transfer spending the like of which we have never seen before. We were nearly relegated. Why would he coming back? Surely not as our Chief Exec.

I worry about these owners of ours.

Maybe reading too much I to it, but BT is never CEO material.

I think people are so please that Gourley is gone that they've forgotten that most wanted BT gone too.

You also have to give him credit for putting together a squad with an identity (something that we sorely lacked during Clarke and McDermott 2.0 and a problem we now seem to have again) and working well with the right manager.

His transfers were VERY hit and miss, but then, so are pretty much every DOF's. The only glaring misjudgement over a very large sum of money was Aluko, the rest of his poor transfers were relatively low budget punts like your Wieser's and your Gravenberch's, or players like Edwards and Popa, who wouldn't have cost much more than £1m each. For every one of those you've got Moore, Barrow, Swift, Bodvarsson, Meite etc.

Actually, Gourlay was in by then and would have has oversight....

Not until summer 2017. We broke our transfer record on Ilori in Jan 17 and bought Popa in too along with the loan signings of Grabnan and Oxford.

And to be fair, Ilori has been a good signing, Popa showed he should have been good. Grabban was played out of position by Stam. Oxford was a waste who has now completely disappeared as a player.

Wouldn't mind seeing Tevreden back, maybe as DoF but not as CEO. Clearly the owners see something in him to move him to their other club rather than just get rid of him and you do wonder if moving him was part of a plan to get rid if Gourlay.

Has he? He's shown glimpses of being a good player but wouldn't say he's been consistently good enough.

Hard to explain but he's one of those players who makes himself look better than he actually is.

We also had Mutch from Palace. There was logic to Oxford being one of the most sought after CBs and Mutch given he had been a decent Championship midfielder in the past.... same with Grabban when played as a striker. Credit where it's due - they each played a part in our run to the playoff final.

Popa has been a weird one, injuries and seems to be a personality thing there, perhaps a failing in scouting of personality as he's shown promise on the pitch.

Ilori has been solid enough and there's definite potential to keep improving, just needs to iron out a few of the basics more. Not cheap, but you don't get a £1m Moore style option open often.......

brian was responsible for ditching the reading way, and subsequently getting rid of lots of useful players at this level, and replacing them with a load of weak identikit midfielders whoi couldnt fight their way out of a lettuce leaf
gourlay compounded that massively, by spending way more money on buying a load of even weaker identikit midfielders, but going back to tev is not the answer imo.
what experience does he have to become a CEO?
