Roy Bentley's Stationary Club

by strap » 02 Dec 2018 16:15

No, not a retro spin off of Dunder and Mifflin or Wernham Hogg, but another book from the pen of Roger Titford. Probably only appeals to "supporters of a certain age", but well worth a read. I was drawn to Elm Park by Jack Mansell's team of "ball-playing sophisticates" but Roger's book provides an excellent context to the club Mansell inherited.

I'm about half-way through and can certainly recommend as a stocking filler for anyone who realises that from 2001-02 onwards, these are, despite recent seasons, the golden years of RFC!!

looks right up my street. I went to a few home games in the late 60's with my Dad. Only became a regular in 1975-76 (what a season that was).

Totally IN for this and still clear memories of that era. Bentley's team where there or thereabouts during his reign - 6th, 13th, 8th, 4th, 5th - but the wheels started coming off in 68/69 and they finished 14th. It was an awful season, and the club had introduced Friday night home games to combat dwindling gates. I hated it; and I also hated that awful washed-out, last-shirt-out-of-the-bag sky blue kit. New hope came with Jack Mansell, but that all ended in tears very quickly.

Going to order from WSC or persuade my daughter that it would make a nice Christmas thought.

You and me both, Ark.... although '67 was my first season.

I've sent a note to Santa.

On the Xmas list even though I wasn’t born! I still love to read about Reading. Who else would come up with the brilliant idea of changing to Sky Blue because Coventry had won back to back promotions in those colours!

Couldn't wait for Christmas.
Ordered yesterday afternoon, delivered 10 minutes ago and no charge for postage-marvellous and thank you strap for bringing it to our attention.
Have just seen one photo of the players on a coach leaving for an away game and recognise Colin Meldrum, Denis Allen, Peter Silvester, Mike Dixon ,Dougie Webb and Maurice Evans...….that's a good start.

Thought the book cover looked familiar. Nice work.

If the image doesn't appear - it's the 1968/9 programme cover.
