MATCHWATCH : Queens Park Rangers sponsored by the Simod Cup started here

by Sutekh » 27 Dec 2018 11:34

When : Saturday 29th December, 3pm
Where : Loftus Road Stadium, South Africa Road, London, W12 7PA
Capacity : 18,439
Away Stand : School End (Upper Tier)
What might I see in the area : Steptoe & Son

The miserable playing record that is now no wins in 8 makes its tiresome trail to west London for (thankfully) the last game of this truly awful year to face a really quite useful Queens Park Rangers who are now hanging around the fringes of the play offs.

2018. The year that has so far seen Reading play 56 games (incl. 6 preseason friendlies) and win a whopping 9 of them. Talk solely of league games and it's 47 games with just 7 wins and 14 draws. That means Reading have earned 35 points from more or less a complete season of games. About as truly awful as any team could ever be in this modern age of the professional game.

And now it’s QPR. QPR are on a run of 3 straight wins including victories at home to Middlesbrough and away at high flying Nottingham Forest (their first ever win at the City Ground in 35 attempts). To add to the difficulty of the challenge QPR have only failed to score once since 29th September (14 games) and they have kept two successive clean sheets though did concede 11 goals in the 6 games previous to that.

Injury wise QPR will be without Tomer Hemed while Reading have Obita, Ilori, McIntyre, Gunter and Eza injured though Ilori and Gunter might make the game. On top of that Bacuna and Blackett are both suspended so Gomes gets a further opportunity to learn about his available options.

Therefore I’d expect O’Shea to reappear alongside Moore to give more experience to the back line rather than the youth of Osho. Radar absentees Kelly or Meyler should get a shout in place of Bacuna in midfield. Overall I personally think Gomes sees attack as the best form of defence so I would expect a fairly attacking line up.

Referee

Robert Jones is taking charge of this one.

Previously

03 Aug 18 > Reading 1-2 Derby County
13 Mar 18 > Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 Reading
30 Jan 18 > Burton Albion 1-3 Reading

Historically

QPR and Reading are regular opponents of each other. Right back into Victorian times they’ve been knocking six bells out of each other with the only gap of any real note being when QPR caught a bout of ambition back in the late 60s which saw them disappear into loftier circulation for the best part of 3 decades. Luckily Reading had been successfully vaccinated against ambition at some point in the mid 1950s and so managed to avoid such pretensions until well into the 1990s.

Yet despite this and the ongoing protestations from both camps over who has the actual right to wear blue and white hoops this is another of those should be derby games that aren’t derby games.

So this is the 45th season and 90th time the two clubs have gone in search of Football League points. It’s therefore the 45th visit to the “Meccano bowl”, that hybrid of steel and wood that masquerades as a football stadium down in deepest, darkest Shepherd’s Bush.

As you’d probably expect the home side has had much the better of things with Reading managing only 11 victories compared to the 20 so far notched by the “fakes”. One minor achievement is in view though as the next league goal Reading score there will be their 50th. Reading are also on a run of only one win thin the last 8 league trips to West London.

How to follow the game
  1. Get a ticket and travel to the game
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Use an iFollow subscription
  5. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Robert Jones has a very untrustworthy look about him. He will screw us.

QPR it is. So yeah, Stevie Mac is doing ok. We laughed him off when he was available, thinking Clement was better. We didn't fancy quite a few others back then. Monk was a joke and was ridiculed left and right. Potter? Nah. Bielsa and Farke were foreigners. Pullis? Leave it out, too boring. As for 'Lamps', he'd be in for a rude awakening, it would take him years to learn and implement, prolly in the lower divisions first.

There really wasn't much time for speculation after Stam left. Clement was nailed on with the bookies within hours. The reaction was really one of people being a bit underwhelmed.

After the two red cards, picking a team for Saturday, is going to be an absolute nightmare.
I would probably go for:

Jakkola
Yiadom Moore OShea Richards

Rino Swift Meyler (maybe Onsho ?)

Macca Meite Barrow

Not far off this.

Though Swift in for Baldock and maybe Meyler for Kelly. Actually makes me realise how much we are going to miss Bacuna there. Him and Rino are a decent partnership. Utterly stupid of him.

Any other lads in the U23 fancy a game? East looks handy...

I'm dropping Jaakkola after Millwall. He was at fault for the goal and can't play out from the back well enough. Let's give Mannone a couple of games and see if he is a better fit for the system.

Good shout, Andrews. No noise in here re. fk, so figured it was me. Seemed slow to get across gIven velocity.

Imagine he’ll start, been in good form, will he regress to mean? Was even bit disappointed at Rovrum, some gk come for those, then It went between his legs(?)

And yes, distrib in this sys is big. Even when he kicks long, worried it’s going out for throw.

Btw, surprised if Swift don’t start. Imo, was good @Millwall, and @Rovrum. Early doors, but could be player in this system.

Denver you really are talking bollocks here. Were any of these managers in the running?

Not Denver’s finest moment. I would have loved Potter as our manager. Swansea may be on a poor run but they have an incredibly thin squad thanks to their asset stripping owners.

Think Potter has still underachieved with that Swansea squad so far - they’ve still some decent players

Meyler should never play for us again IMO he was worthless, and Swift and Kelly can't play together, so seeing as Kelly isn't a complete liability in defence and Baldock will close from the front and get stuck in (unlike the ex-Chelsea fairy), that was the only option for me.

East is worth a shout, but he's quite small and that makes our midfield very inexperienced and young.

Never said they were in the running. But, we don't wait to know that before giving opinions on blokes. It didn't stop us discussing them when we started talking about getting a new manager in, say, Jan-Mar. Remember, some wanted Stam out as early as Nov, so obviously we looked at alternatives before knowing who was in the running. (How do you ever really know that for sure anyway? From snippets and rumours in the, er, 'credible' media?) -

As I recall, leon, you yourself wanted someone from the lower leagues. To your knowledge, was he ever seriously considered? So, we looked around, tossed some names out there, saw who was available and/or who we thought was get-able, and gave our opinions, etc. Pretty sure McClaren's name came up. Potter. Monk. Nigel Clough. And a host of others, most of whom were likely never 'in the running'.

Zip, do you recall it differently?

Mannone
Yiadom, O'Shea, Moore, Gunter
Meyler, Rinomhota
Meite, Edwards, Baldock
Bodvarsson

Jaakkola, Osho, Richards, Kelly, McCleary, Loader, House

Just please no Swift, Barrow, Sims or Loader in the 11, players like the first three are a core problem of what has gone wrong the last couple of seasons

In the case of the first two, not sure I agree.
In any event, irrespective of the past, it's possible for players to improve under a different manager/system, and I'd imagine that's the club's plan/hope.

Nah they just haven't been active on the pitch for months so benefit from the must be better than the incumbent galaxy school of thought.

Although, i have to say I never thought Edwards was that bad. Not great obvs.
