MATCHWATCH : Sheffield United (a) sponsored by Nicky Forster

by Sutekh » 14 Feb 2019 10:08

When : Saturday 16 February, 3pm
Where : Bramall Lane, Sheffield, S2 4SU
Capacity : 32,702
Away Stand : Behind the goal in the Redbrik Estate Agency Stand (usually the upper tier)
What might I see in the area : steel (but no sapphire)

And the Sheffield saga comes to an end for another season with part two following hard on the heels of last week’s goalless pleasure in the blue half of the city of Sheffield

This has to be seen as a “bonus ball”. No one expects Reading to get anything whatsoever so the pressure is right off and all heaped on the Blades as they will look to continue their great from this season that has seen them become genuine promotion contenders.

United have won 7 of their last 12 in the league and are unbeaten at home in the league since losing to WBA in mid December. They have scored in all but one of those games. They have shown grit, fight and determination but also can be subject to a little bit of panic from time to time like in the 3-3 draw with Villa a week or two ago.

The Blades have a doubt over Jack O’Connell’s fitness and Chris Basham is suspended. Reading’s injury concerns really are Rinomhota and perhaps Eza who theoretically should be available again if his comment 3 or 4 weeks ago was correct – although he’s not going to be match fit but perhaps a place on the bench might be possible, though if that happens one of the other loanees will have to miss out entirely

So this will definitely need a performance akin to the Forest and 2nd half v Blackburn to get anything out of it. Last thing we all need is another Blackburn first half performance otherwise it’ll all be over after half an hour. For the record Rotherham are at home to Sheffield Wednesday with a 1pm kick off scheduled so by the time Reading kick off it’ll probably already be determined where Reading will finish the day in the table.

Referee

Back for the third time this season is Robert Jones

Previously

26 Dec 18 > Queens Park Rangers 0-0 Reading
03 Aug 18 > Reading 1-2 Derby County
13 Mar 18 > Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 Reading
30 Jan 18 > Burton Albion 1-3 Reading

Historically

Another club where league visits were unknown until the late 1970s. Since then Reading have made 19 trips to the Lane and not done too badly to date by recording 5 victories to 8 defeats. Nothing but a solitary point to show from the last three visits though. Reading have scored 19 league goals in the 19 visits compared to 27 from the Blades.

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and travel to the game
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Use an iFollow subscription
  5. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Sheffield Utd away will always remind me of 2 things:

Nicky Forster's bullet from outside the box on Sky & Kevin Doyle scoring after about 12 seconds in the Prem.

Fear we will get beaten up there but the game is a bit of a bonus one. It is all about Rotherham next Saturday.

Couldn't have been landed with a more annoying game after a good victory.

The three matches after this weekend are season-defining so anything would be a bonus.

Rooting for Sheffield Wednesday who kick off at Rotherham 2 hours before us. anything less than a home win there and we stay outside the drop zone even if we lose, which seems likely.

Im liking the look of that formation.....plenty of defensive cover with a solid option to counter. Im not fearing this game so much now the back line looks solid. I think we can make things very uncomfortable for them.

Barrow is clearly out of favour. If he doesn't get on the pitch at home to Blackburn why on earth would he play at Sheffield United?

Actually think he played Richards out left to try and stifle Blackburns threat from wide posistions, I read somewhere before the game that 74% of their goals this season from open play have come from crosses.
I would imagine Barrow will be somewhere near the starting lin up for Saturday.

pretty much this but Ejaria in for Barrow. We absolutely cannot go in with Kelly and Swift in the mid, and I'd be fearful if Kelly was in at all

Sheff Utd are a decent side, was very impressed with them against Villa until the blew up. Cant see us getting much from it

He's missed 107 minutes of league football since Gomes game in. Completed 90 minutes in 6 of the 8 league games under Gomes. How is he out of favour?

How many minutes has he got recently? He is out of favour, Gomes has seen enough. Didn't even get on the pitch last night, says it all.

Out of the last 2 games? 90 minutes. Out of the last 3 games? 180 minutes. Out of the last 4 games? 253 minutes. All the Gomes led games before that? Full 90.

Gomes seems to like rotating the wingers every game. Harriott, Ejaria, McCleary, Barrow, Aluko and Richards have all had a go out there recently. Not sure whether this is some masterplan of his or he really is keep dropping them every other game

Out of the last 3 games? 90 minutes I think you mean. I know Barrow is pretty forgettable because he contributes absolutely nothing but he didn't get on the pitch against Villa, with Gomes preferring a LB to play LM. Didn't play yesterday and we win, funny that

Would go with

Martinez

Yiadom
Miazga
Moore
Blackett

Kelly
Rino

Meite
Swift
Richards

Oliveira

Walker McShane Gunter Baker Aluko Barrow Bodvarsson

Possibly Ejaria in for one of the defenders but really don't rate him

You got me there. I forgot about Villa. Funnily we didn't win that though.. strange... it a almost like whether or not Barrow plays doesn't mean we win or lose.
