Ian Royal Well I was under the impression that it was because he has a clause in his contract allowing him to talk to a club that makes an offer of a certain amount. Sidwell has definetely said that he would like Reading to match the offer he has received because he would like to stay.

simple enough for you Finch?

Just to piss on your fire my friend...

Official site says
Nick also stressed there are no automatic release clauses in Steve's contract, saying, "There was a clause from the time of Steve's original contract when he signed as a young player from Arsenal, after having loan spells at Brentford and Brighton.

"This put a value on the player at that time, but since then he has greatly developed and the clause bears no relation to him now as a Premiership player and an England under 21 international."

One other thing... Maybe not meant to be on this thread but beings as Sidwell has been bought up:

Official Site says:

We have no intention of selling him

So Charlton may have to up their bid a significant amount.

Just going on what I had read in various places, mostly this thread. regardless of whether that is right or not I still can't see why Sidwell is being vilified. Oh and I didn't say it was a release clause, just that it allowed him to speak to them, that's a pretty different state of affairs. I don't claim to kknow the players or staff though so all I've got to go on is common sense and what gets reported on here and in the press.

Oh and Finch, nothing cocky, just giving you an answer to your question. Which you would have got yourself had you read the earlier parts of the Sidwell thread, unless you forgot about all the stuff on there.

I am perfectly willing to hold my hands up when I'm wrong... like my Speculation on UR&G

Convey signing is great news though.

I thought it was all quite simple, but obviously not simple enough for some.

Sidwell has a clause in his contract which allows him to talk to any Premiership cub which offer RFC £2million or more. That club are free to discuss contractual terms with him - in effect offer him a contract.

However, RFC are NOT obliged to sell him even if Sidwell finds those terms acceptable - that is why it is not a "release clause".

I thought the release clause was not valid now he's a Premiership player.

Bobby Convey Loyal Royal
Steve Sidwell????????????

I know Bobby hasn't got a wife and kid to support but has got that tasty bit of eye candy I saw after QPR, I know I couldn't afford that.
(Apologies to my wife).

Convey's attitude on signing a new contract is the complete oppostie to Sidwell. The fact is that he's happy to sign a contract for significantly less than the 18k a week that Sidwell wanted. I doubt whether clubs being interested in him or not was that important, he wanted to repay our loyalty and appreciates being given a new contract. It seems that he's not cocky enough to think hes made it in the Premiership, even though he's more cut out than Sidwell is.

Oh and for the record Sidwell isnt going to Charlton, he's going to Man City most probably.

Maybe he will come back for a vacation. I hear he could pay to play against the Royal legends at Murts testimonial.

No he's not. He was once - in his one season of fitness and motivation (just before a World Cup) - but he's certainly not now!
