Focher Mark Whitlock was hardly Rio Ferdinand in the heart of defence, a possible candidate

Whitlock's name sprang immediately to mind as being possibly the worst player. I seem to remember he did eventually improve, but it was too little too late.

Neale Cooper's been mentioned -- fair enough, although I thought he had a fantastic game in a pre-season match against Dnepr (for that 90 mins, he was probably the best passer I'd seen at Reading for years).

I remember Adie Williams' first few games and thinking he was awful -- shows how much I know.....

Since the move to the Madejski, Evers by a mile. He always looked scared sh1tless, like a little boy whose mummy had ordered him to go out and play with the big kids.

At Elm Park (post 1978 at least), Dave Shipperley. Turning circle of a supertanker.

Van Der Kwaak- the anti Van Der Saar unfortunately.

Although my personal favourite worst player was Matty Robinson. Just awful at EVERYTHING. Probably stands out for me as i used to play left back too. There were worse players overall though.

International Royal It strikes me on this thread that we are talking about different eras. Some of the names mentioned are nowhere near the crap standard that the longer term followers have had to put up with. When things were really bad the fan base was nowhere near the size it is now.

New supporters since the move have no idea what crap actually is. I realise it's relative but believe me some of the names mentioned were not too bad given the circumstances of the time. People like Hodges, Jones, Asaba, and others were OK. To suggest Halls should be included is nonense, he would have been a star in other eras.

Have to agree wholeheartedly. In absolute terms, the most recent crop, even Burns' worst signings would have walked into some of the sides I saw and been seen as pretty decent players. I'm not old enough to remember the 70's but some of the players I saw at EP in the late 80's weren't fit to lick the piss off the floor of the South Bank toilets.

Nick Shorey my Lord! You can tell the pLOLastics on this thread.

Robinson? Do me a favour, he was more than able for the first 6-12 months or so and did a decent job in a transitional side.

Well, for what it's worth, I fcuking hated Matt Robinson, he just got it and his second touch was always, without fail, to hoof it as far as he could... and he went straight from us to Oxford. Cnut.

Evers was awful as well though. and cost 5 times as much, so I can understand that call...

I'm sorry but that's just f*cking bollocks.

You're telling me that he was worse than the previous encumbants in the left back role (post Gilkes in that quite good 532 we used to do) - Stuart Gray, Steve Swailes and Paul Bodin (and Jimmy Crawford ? i forget it was all terrible)??? Because they were f*cking sh*t.

But then I don't think you saw them play

Anyone remember Nigel Vaughan, on loan from "Cardiff" I think. 5ft tall and scored with a header, was a laugh and not a cheer if I remember

How about Mike Conroy? Especially in the days of Porterfield playing him at left back.

Good call, he was genuine shït for us. I recall seeing him subsequently play for Burnley against us and he looked a much improved player.

Technically we didn't. We lost 3-2, Gordon Durie had put them 3-0 up and they were coasting it. Colin popped up with 2 goals including the back heel to lose 3-2 but win the tie 5-4 after a 3-1 home win.

Well remembered, fozzy! I was up the Shed end with some Chelsea friends (and some other real neanderthals ...) which was the end Colin got the back-heel ... I just remembered feeling jubilant - and having to bite my tongue because of some of the scum around me ...

URZZ Aren't we forgetting Asaba...

Nope.

West_Reading Michael Meaker or Sean Evers.

Also, although he wasn't truly awful, Asaba was a huge waste of 900,000 quid.

Byron Glasgow was'nt really bad and he was one of my fav players in the season he was a regular in as he was one of the few bright lights in that very dark season we had.
