Pearce Joins Saints on Loan

by The Prisoner » 30 Oct 2008 11:57

Alex Pearce has joined Southampton on loan until 1st Jan. He can be recalled at any time and may not play in games between us.

Shows signs that SSC is backing Bikey, Ingi and Doobs with Cisse as cover?

We've used the loan system (quite well IMHO) to give our youngsters good experience.

Pearce going and having a couple of months of action for Saints seems better than sitting on the bench for us - as long as he does actually start for them !

Presumably Doobs must be close to fitness, although with an instant recall for Pearce it's not that big an issue.

Bikey is good on his day but far to clumsy and tries to do too much when sometimes he should keep it simple.
Ivar/Dubes are slow but their experiance valuable.

Pearce I thought was superb for us and I was dissapointed and surprised to see him dropped, as I am with Karacan.

Not pleased with this loan move. I'd like Pearce in for Ivar.

If you'd said this first then I could have saved myself 14seconds as I wouldn't have bothered reading the rest.

It's a fair move. He's a boy not yet a man and we've got plenty of manly cover at centre-half.

Challenge the rest, as you wasted some of that important time of yours?
Did you think Peace needed replacing when he was dropped? It was a bit out of the blue. He had been playing well, very well infact.
For me it smacked of Coppell trying to keep his so called 'stars' happy. Much like dropping Karacan for Harper/Gunnarsson. Granted Gunnar has an injury.

pearce was responsible for a couple of mistakes leading to goals in the time before being dropped.

good to see him go out and get the regular football he needs-will be a bigger and better player when he returns

Just because a player isn't selected it doesn't mean he was 'dropped'. The team selection at Burnley seemed to make sense given both Gunnarsson and Karajan have had injuries of late and also been playing twice a week. If you have a squad it makes sense to use the squad.

It's just nice that we can help out a little club like Southampton.

Personally I'd have Pearce in the team, Doobs and Ivar if they are better than Pearce, are only just better. Would then pick Pearce beacuse of his age and potential. Coppell prefers experience, which is understandable.

Yep agree with you. We should be looking to build something.
Obviously there will fluctuations in form over a 46 game season and to have players of the calibre of Duberry & Ingimarsson on stand by if we need to take him out of the firing line for a couple of games is a luxury few, if any, in this Division can boast.

I guess that most will agree that Bikey is our 1st choice and from Coppell's point of view he'd like a cool experienced head alongside him which as you is understandable.

I know we all want him to do well but he isn't one of our two best CB's just yet. The goal at Watford really showed that he's not quite there just yet. Sucked into midfield to try to win a header which he loses, the guy spins off him into the box and scores after he fails to track him back in. Funny enough very much like the Lampard goal for Chelsea last season when Bikey came charging into a midfield area.
The difference with the likes of Ivar and Doobs is that you won't see them make mistakes like that. They defend their area of the pitch and cover the other CB when not contesting the header.
I think Pearce is going to be really decent but he is still on a learning curve. Great loan move in that respect.

Thought Pearce was alright during his spell in the side earlier this season, no doubt he will be a fine player for the future but at times I wasn't so sure whether he was ready. Good loan move, gives him more opportunites to familarise himself with this league. Sooner we have Doobs back the better, we desperately lack leaders on the pitch.

Duberry should be captaining this team imo, when he's fit of course. armband around the leg? fcuk off.

Pearce did well when he played this season but he does not have the pace to make it at a high level. I would put Bikey, Ivar, Doobs, and Cisse ahead of him.

pearce isn't fit to wear the shirt

i am always fascinated by grown men's obsession with kids

the best players should play-a football team is not a kindergarden

Great move for him joining the biggest club in the South - I doubt he'll want to come back! :D

So on the basis that Pearce lacks a bit of pace you'd put other players who also lack pace ahead of him ?

Plenty of centre backs lack pace, but make up for it by reading the game. It's not a killer problem in that position.
