... i know someone who has recently had a business meeting with SJM and NH. SJM was defiant that RFC would survive in the CCC. Howe on the other hand was already resigned to relegation and planning for League One.

I'd read into that standard business planning.

In a business like football with annual cycles you would expect the CE to plan for all possible scenarios. This time last year they would have been putting two business plans together, one for promotion and one for not getting promoted.

It would be careless in the extreme to plump for one possibility and ignore the other. To have to start putting a plan together for the second option in May would be near enough impossible.
In this situation the plan if we stay up is probably easy to produce, the one if we go down much harder so you'd put more attention on that.

If we stay up then it will be by the skin of our teeth. The investment needed to ensure that status is maintained may well be high. A new LB will be needed and certainly strengthened up front and at CB.

If we go down, the planning is much easier. Don't need to look for money for new signings that's for sure! Reduce the numbers coming in through the gates and commercial areas and work from there.

Howe is essentially the problem @ the club. people who dont know wat they're talking about slate Rodgers, Hammond, Madejski, whoever but Howe is the real cancer. Never got behind Rodgers, created unrest within the club and single handidly created the problems we're in now

Can't agree with you there AF2. Running a football club is a business, and Howe's experience in business is unrivalled by any other football club chief executive.

Reading fans have unrealistic expectations of what can be done whilst running the club as a business - and when managers like Rodgers who was no better than a fan himself come into contact with Howe, that's when we have problems.

My worry is that the constant criticism of Howe will lead to him taking a back seat. You only have to look at Portsmouth to see how dangerous that would be for us.

The supporters of the current board and Chief Executive can't have it both ways. They and the board claim football is like any other business.If that is the case there are a few inescapable principles. Firstly, you can't continue to cut costs. At the end of the day you need sensible investment on an ongoing basis in order to secure the longer term security, prosperity and growth of that business. Secondly, you have to keep moving forwards, if not, you tend to start falling backwards. Thirdly, you have to provide a product that customers are happy with and want to buy. Fourthly, if you p*ss off your customers they will desert you in their droves. Fifthly, if you start providing a shyte product you can't expect/ask your customers to carry on supporting you purely through brand loyalty.

Reality is, football isn't entirely like other businesses.

As for Howe's experience in business, as a Quantity Surveyor and Project Manager if I recall correctly, is it that brilliant and successful? And when it comes to his experience in the different business of football, the likes of Karen Brady wipe the floor with him!

That's the nub of it, though - it's not "our" club, is it? Spiritually and emotionally it is, but look at the share register and see just how much "our" club it is.

But then again, spirit and emotion don't build stadia or pay players' wages, let along put in financial subsidies when the numbers of "us" coming through the gates to watch "our" club don't generate enough money to make us self-sufficient.

He is now taking everything he can out of the club and is running it for his personal benefit as opposed to that of the community - he can't have his cake and eat it.

But he's not "taking everything he can out of the club and running it for his personal benefit" - he's actually just not putting anything extra into it from outside, and he's leaving it to run on its own as a self-sustaining business. And that's a very different thing from what you just said.

He's taking out money in 'loan repayments' and is drawing in money he invested initially - which is not running the business in its best long term interests. You don't see every chairman in the league paying back loan payments in such dramatic fashion whilst claiming the club is 'well-run'. It's no coincidence that many of Madejski's businesses are reported to be struggling, the documentary he featured in should leave no doubt as to his mindset.
