Gylfi setback

by IcelandicStokie » 02 Mar 2010 15:21

He has been ruled out after a late fitness test for the U-21 game for Iceland against Germany today. Maybe next Sunday is in danger?

I am thinking that maybe he has been rushed back too soon after his recent injury problem.

Looked like he picked up a little knock on Saturday. If he was close to making it tonight then I'm sure he'll be ok for Sunday.

If not, then at least he won't have another chance to impress the ever-growing number of scouts......

He was limping quite badly when going down the tunnel after being on the pitch to applaud the fans on saturday

I'm guessing it is do with the treatment he had on his ankle down in the south east corner. think he rolled his ankle but not quite sure

Can't imagine it was that bad given he seemed to carry on quite comfortably after that.

It will have stiffened up a bit and they won't want to risk him.

He injured his ankle early second half, was fine until he stopped running. He had a heavy limp when he came onto celebrate at the end of the match on the weekend.

He's fine if he was able to continue playing, but the club will not want him playing on it midweek for 90 minutes.

ZacNaloen He injured his ankle early second half,

He received quite lengthy treatment down in front of Y26 after a late tackle fairly early in the first half on Saturday.

Yep, it was the first half when he was caught late on his ankle by one of the Wednesday players.

It wasn't that early on though as I remember the new physio checking the time left (just over ten minutes IIRC) and it looked like they decided to leave it until half time.

A lot of knocks like that are easy to run off at the time when the adrenalin is pumping. Give it a couple of days to stiffen up and it can be a different story though.

My guess is he will be fine for Sunday though!

The real question to be asked is what on earth is he doing in their U21 side anyway !

I'd be surprised if Iceland have more than 30 or 40 decent players so he should be playing for the first team.

Clearly something is rotten in Icelandic football.....

He did. Though he may have retired again since then. Gylfi will be in the team by next season for sho, I'm sure.

Ivar quit the international scene in our second season in the premiership as he felt it was effecting his form for Reading

On the OS it says Gylfi Sigurdsson(ankle) - he'll be monitored this week.

That was updated today. Does not sound too promising to me. They usually indicate if they think a player has a chance of playing the next game.

Germany 2- Iceland 2!!!!

Yes but Iceland has now a real chance to qualify for the U-21 European championship with quality players like Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson (AZ Alkmaar), Siggy (Reading) and Aron Gunnarsson Coventry. Before todays match Iceland were second in the group, on 12 poins, behind the Czechs on 15. Germany (who are the reigning U-21 champions since last summer) were 3rd on 7 points!!! Well after tonighs result in Germany which ended 2-2!! Iceland have most probably left the big boys of Germany behind, a no mean feat and a testament of the talent currently coming through in Iceland. Gylfi nor Aron Gunnarsson of Coventry played today but we still managed a draw. Furthermore is Iceland the highest scorers of all the teams in qualifying. We spanked Northern Ireland 6-2 in Belfast last autumn. All I have to say to Reading, dont stop looking at Icelandic players, there are some good ones coming through.
