He explained: “I used to be Sidwell’s boot boy back in the day.

“He tipped pretty well and never sent this boots back because he was unhappy with them.

“He was a great character to have around the place and we’re all trying to emulate that team he was part of that got promoted to the Premier League.

“You can learn a lot from players like that.”

Robson-Kanu now has James Rowe keep his electric blue footwear glistening for Sunday’s TV game.

I thought having the apprentices clean boots was a thing of the past. Glad to see it isn't.

You are not allowed to make them clean boots, the players have to pay them to do it.

I remember some African player got his boot boy some top of the range car.

Child Protection Laws play a massive part of academy football and is one of the main reason we produce so many pampered and soft footballers.

Totally agree on that.

Pretty sure Reading used to have some old boy do the boots but he got laid off, only for some of the players to pay for him out of their own pockets.

All the Academy boys are allocated a range of jobs, not just cleaning players boots. Prized job is "tea boy" for making refreshments for management and coaches -- though pity the boy that had a smile on his face on a Monday if SSC had lost.
Seriously it is one of the contributing factors as to why so many clubs seek our Academy graduates for loans. There is undoubtedly a Reading "character", which is now being shown by the boys getting into the 1st team.
